Patcher Woes

Let me express what many of you are feeling right now: Arrrrrrrrrgh! Let me in! Let me in! I want my Kitty! *breathe* OK. According to Sony, they are aware of the problems and are working on them, including bringing on more patching servers. Why they didn't think of this before, since this is almost identical to what happened at the original release is beyond me, but I'm sure they want you to play their game as much as you want to play it. Feel free to use this forum to try to help each other get into the game or to just console each other while you wait.

You have to unzip the file you downloaded from the website inside of the Everquest folder and send the files directly to the folder. Do not make a everquest.unzip folder if it asks

I've downloaded the directx 8.1 program twice already and still keep getting the same no 3d devices found. Some of the previous posts said that downloading the directx 8.1 would fix it but it probably won't. Everquest is too messed up to be fixed by downloading one program.

I'm also having the "no 3D device found" problem, WITH DirectX8.1 on Win98 2nd edition. I've already re-downloaded and reinstalled DX 8.1, so skip that suggestion.

Running DXdiag.exe, the second 3d test brings this message:

Direct3D test results: Failure at step 5 (GetDeviceCaps): HRESULT = 0x8876086a (3D not available)

Well, my 3D's there and has its driver, nice and reinstalled after the DX reinstall. So what's this message actually mean? Other than that my "3D not found" may be a problem caused by DirectX 8.1 rather than by EQ... Every version of DirectX I've used up 'til this one worked just dandy; figures EQ would require an upgrade to the one that's a POS.

If you are having this step 5 error with DirectX 8.x, try this (it worked for me):

Open dxdiag.exe (you may have to search your c: drive for it, but in XP it's at c:\windows\system32)

Go to the "Display" tab and click the "Disable" button next to "Direct3D Acceleration". Click the "Exit" button to close the application.

Open dxdiag.exe again and go back to the "Display" tab. Click "Enable" next to "Direct3D Acceleration". It should now be fixed. To test it out, click the "Test Direct3D" button. It's sad this kind of problem exists, sadder still is the fix, and that I couldn't find help at Microsoft's site.

intel 810
# Dec 05 2001 at 5:21 PM Rating: Default
I am having trouble with the 'black boxes' around all text, trees, and othere graphic voids. There are no names on the char. selection screen, just black boxes.
Yes I do have an Intel 810 graphics controller, is this the root of the problem? If yes, what is the fix? I have DirectX8.1 installed. The Verant team is not responding to my E-mails and the support web site does not address this problem even remotely.

Here as well in France we have problems

we have 2 PC at home both on EQ.

We have divice.
Do we have to have Directx8.1???????
Do we have to run the EQ CD with Directx8.1 ?????
or Do we have to buy the Shadow of Luclin CD???

We know lots of French Non Speaking English Players who would like to have those informations.

On the other hand, i hope you will managed to overcome all the problems soon.
If it carry on people will go on other games and get addicted and then they will forget Everquest.
That would be bad, Hein?!

If you have Windows 98 or better... YES, you need DirectX 8.1 installed. Download it from Microsoft or the EQ website, and then install (or reinstall) the most current drivers for your video and audio cards.

If you have Windows 95, same thing, but with DirectX 8.0a instead.

You are not SUPPOSED to have to buy EQ:Shadows of Luclin just to get back into the game. I like conspiracy theories, so I am beginning to suspect that may not be true.

I don't know if this will help anyone...
Like a few posts before, I first did the patch. Logged on and made sure it worked. Then I installed SoL, it patched a bunch of stuff again, but it worked for me. Maybe it helps to get on before installing Luclin. BTW the new graphics ran fine for me, anywhere I went. Just real slow zoning, I DID not Start A Kitty though, so I dont know about the lag there.

this is probably a stupid suggestion, and if it's not, i'm sure someone else already posted it, but what the heck

try checking your clip plane

alot of people had it set to max before, if they had a decent system, but with luclin, i think that the clipping plane can now go out alot farther, so the "max clipping plane" now is alot bigger than the "max clipping plane" of 2 days go

i dunno if it'll work for anyone else, but after i finally got on, i was having the same serious lag issues that everyone else is, and moving at like 1 frame every 5 seconds, till i stumbled onto that

ive spent the last 3 hours just checking with others on eq chat, and other places.seems to be mainly directed to intel810 vidio chipset although others are having the same black boxes.
intel is suppose to be fixing a driver for the prob that will be done by tonight, but we all know what that means, prob next week.although now intel web page is down hopefullt to put on the new driver. hope this hlps everyone a bit.
Someone's Gotta Say It!

Well, I'm going to say this cause I don't think anybody else is going to. Until Verant does some heavy patching the only people who are going to play SOL smoothly are those with some serious hardware. I know I'm probably going to get flamed for this but I don't care. EQ says you can use this and be fine. BS, you can't! If you want to play the game smoothly and the way it was meant to be played, don' lie to us,tell us that we should definately be using 512meg of ram, a gforce3 or radeon 8500, a 7200rpm speed harddrive. I have talked to all the local geeks where I live and all who are nut running the above are experiencing either video lag, or harddrive lag. Just think of how much data your harddrive has to search though with all of EQ installed. That's allot of data to be processed at one time! The more data on your harddrive to search and pull the longer it takes. The faster your harddrive the faster it pulls thus a 7200rpm harddrive. Then of course the video card. Do you seriously think that a 16meg video card is going to run a newly designed graphics engine? Nope, affraid not. I had a friend using a gforce2 mx400 with 64meg and he still had video lag and this guy was running on a T1 connect. We thought maybe it was because the servers were busy but we are still seing the same problem. I'm just basically saying this to warn those who haven't bought SOL yet to be ready to upgrade if you want to play this game the way it was meant to be played. Flame me or not folks, how smoothe is it really running for you unless you have a nice system all around? Good luck everybody. Sony-Verant, you had better get that whip cracking harder or you are going to loose alot of folks!
My Take on the Patch

Last night it took me about 7+ hours to get on. I kept hanging on every file down load. What I had to do to finally be able to get SoL up and running and Make my New Kitty Kat! I un-installed the SoL the EQ Trilogy next. I took the 2 CD Trilogy and reinstalled. I then ran through the Patch update and was able to downlaod the hole thing for once. I then tried to log into the game I got the message for the DirectX 8.1 (which I was running the 8.0a) After that I was able to log in my main char. I load SoL next and let it finish the patch part that it need (much smaller and quicker) After that I was able to get in a create a BeastMaster char. Now once I created the char. and tried to play it that is a different story.... The Lag was so bad that in some areas like this outside courtyard I tried to cross I took about 2 - 3 mins. And there was this beeping noise that I kept hearing??? I switched to my Shammy and tried to do some hunting. I saw a little lag from time to time but was able to kill an Elephant and run into NK to sell before they brought the servers down for the 20min patch at 1am PST.

I can only hope that today the lag is gone?????

My PC is
833Mhz
512 Meg memory
Sound Blaster Live Platinum (original CD install drivers)
Matrox millennuim G450 32megs (which I downloaded the driver recommended by their website for supported video cards)

I am glad to know that I am not the only one with the problem of having black boxes around all of my text. I have installed DX8.1 and tried updating the drivers for my video card. I have a laptop and can't replace the video card....Ugh. I REALLY hope Sony and Verant figure out what the heck to do to fix these problems. So far they have not addressed this on their web page. What is EQGfx_Dx8.dll???
# Dec 05 2001 at 4:22 PM Rating: Default
Ok, I will admit my ignorance. When I press play at the patch screen, an error message saying "Failed to load EQGfx_Dx8.dll" comes up. Is this a video problem, direct x problem, or something else completely.
Please help me, I am going through withdrawls!
