Scum as in Uber Leet im such a pro types? I doubt that, it seems to cater to this very player type. If thats the case maybe this isn't such a bad idea :P
    Good Idea?

This additional service is something that I would not consider personally, but looking at what some of VI's options are, this may be a vast improvement to the game. High-level characters WILL unfortunately be the majority on the server, and it may eventually be another Fironia Vie roleplaying arena (which I like) but with anon turned off and the ability to trade all items (I'm sure one of the "perks" will eventually be turning off no-drop, which most twinking high-levels hate).

For me personally, this is great! After all, it gets the high-nosed, high-level, wont-even-look-at-lowbie jerks off my servers and puts them in each other's way instead of mine...
Why I won't sign up for this
    # Feb 02 2002 at 10:57 AM Rating: Excellent
While the idea of this SOUNDS great, I will not be subscribing to it (and I can afford to if I want), due to one fact: Character Transfers being allowed.

The last thing I want to see is signing up on day 1, and by day 2 see 99% of the characters at lvl 50-plus. Very disheartening, to say the least. It would be refreshing if they could start this one out where EVERYONE starts a newbie, no matter what.

But then again, that's just my opinion. (and no, I'm not bashing VI for the decision, just explaining why I won't be signing up for the service)

This is BOGUS and Alan knows it!!!!
    # Feb 02 2002 at 10:18 AM Rating: Default
I think that VI/Sony should not have created another server "Premium" server because there are still alot of issues with their live servers. It looks like they just want to make more money off of us by selling us what they "promised" or "suggested" in the begining. Let me explain.

    1) Bugs and Fixes: Instead of hiring more Developers and Content Creators for a "special" server why not hire them to help the Live team fix the bugs and issues that came from the SOL expansion and to fix the issues that have been plaguing EQ since DAY1!!!! Issues like, falling through the world, NPC warping, bad pathing, spells being inturrpted when you are MISSED, balancing classes, etc. These should be fixed BEFORE a premium server is created. What, your mother and father never taught you to finish what you started??

    2) Customer Service and Online Support: It looks like VI/Sony is trying to do what Mythic and DAoC is doing with a large number of GMs online to help solve issues in a timely manner. The problem here is the comment that Alan made that makes me think he has never sent in a petition and waited between 30 minutes and 6 HOURS for a GM response ("The customer service level on our Live servers is great and it will continue to get better.") We have heard that it will get better for over 2 years now. When will we see it? Why not hire more GMs for the live servers and get the petition wait down to the longest being 1 hour and then think about another server.

    3) Dynamic and GM run quests: This has been asked for since the begining of EQ and we have always been told its in the works or its to hard to impliment yet here comes the "Premium" server and guess what, it has the Dynamic and GM run quests that we have been asking for since April 1999. Wonder how that happened?? Oh yeah, if we want it we need to fork over another $30 bucks. What a sham!!!!

    4) Things from Legends flowing to Live servers: Does this mean that the Legends server is going to be a $39.95 a month TEST servers? This is per Alan's statement, "This content will all go onto the Legends server(s) first. But some of it will also appear on Live servers eventually. It will be an excellent breeding ground for new ideas and content. Certainly a lot of that content will be exclusive to the Legends server(s), but we'll also use some of it on Live servers after it's run its course on Legends." I for one would not want to pay $39.95 a month to be on a test server. I can do that by logging into the Test server thats already there. Come on VI/Sony, can't you do better then this?

    5) $10 compared to $39.95 for Customer Service: This one cracks me up the most. In his response Alan writes, "I'm not sure I should make comparisons, but you might want to look at your cable bill each month and think about how many times you talk to a customer service representative from your cable company during that month." Well Alan, if you must know I have NEVER had to call my Cable Customer Server Rep for anything since my Cable WORKS like it should. Maybe if VI/Sony put their minds to it and FIXED the problems they would not need to hire such a large number of Customer Service Reps. Hmmmm, theres a idea, fix the problem and the calls will stop.

Well, I think I have done enough. I love playing EQ with my wife and friends and can stomach most of the incorrect staements and half-truths that VI/Sony tells us through their paid PR people (sorry Alan, I just call it like I see it, you are a company man and so will never be bias) but when I see Vi/Sony want to charge more for what we have been asking for since day 1 its a bit irritating to say the least. I just hope VI/Sony are really here for the long run because if they do not stop treating their Customer Base like we are a dime a dozen they my just lose us all. After all, we are the ones paying their salaries aren't we? Wonder what would happen if we all canceled our accounts for just a month? That would be fun to see.

    Sincerely,

This makes it pretty clear to me that verant hasn't been reading the petitions, emails, and bug reports. And if they have i can't imagine what exactly it is they're thinnking. It reminds me of the guy at work (everyone has one of these) who you ask to order something, or do some task or whatever, and he smiles and nods saying "ok. ok. yep sure thing. ok. yep i'll go do it right now." You ask ans ask and he smiles and smiles but still manages to not do what you asked or get what you asked for. You all know the guy i mean...
#Anonymous, Posted: Feb 02 2002 at 10:09 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I haven't seen such a bunch of whiney babys since they had the old forums on the EQ site. Nobody is forcing anyone to move over there so who are you to complain about a server you're not even going to play on? Personaly I'm far from uber but I'd still enjoy it just for something new and interesting, but even if I didn't particularly like the idea I wouldn't dog it because it would do absolutely no good for anybody.
    Makeing Money
    # Feb 02 2002 at 9:19 AM Rating: Default
Why is everyone upset that Verant is trying to make money... Isn't that what a corparation IS FOR! Yes, they want customer satisfaction... so you'll stay and pay more money. All the other MMORPGs are the same. Personaly, I'm not going to get Legends, but don't blame them for making it... they are trying to compete with other, new games. Saying "line their pockets with gold" is meeningless because if they were not makeing money, and trying to make more money, there wouldn't BE an EQ. PERIOD. Verant and Sony are just like any other company, Coca Cola, GE, etc... Their sole perpose is makeing money.

I'd pay for it if they start a 'Legends' clean server, with no moves allowed. I've been wishing for a traditional new server to start afresh on and level anew with no twinks and a viable economy. As it is, the Legends servers look like they will be full of the number 2 guilds from all of the old servers.

    40 a month = THE SAME EVERQUEST*

*oh yeah we forgot to mention that you MAY see a gm online!! Yeah great so now instead of waiting 2 hours for a reply (if i get one) it comes in 1 hour(if i get one). Oh what's that? I can't get the item that somehow vanished from my inventory back? Hmmm i seem to have heard this before, ah yes thats back in the day when this only cost 10$ a month. Wake up PLAYERS DON'T SUPPORT THIS!

Seriously if having to pay 30$ more per month gets me what i was PROMISED in the first place, maybe ill think LONG AND HARD about the next SONY product i buy. I mean you buy a Stereo expecting Stereo sound, not mono. After you sell me this stereo I can for 3 times as much as i paid to buy it actually have stereo sound?
WHAT A DEAL THANKS GUY! /flabbergasted

GET REAL, EQ IS NOT WORTH 40 a month WITH ALL THESE "FEATURES" let alone the FACT these "Features" were ADVERTISED as ALREADY being in the game.
I would bet all the money i had that if Sony/VI increases ANY of the normal server's price per month MORE people will leave. (first big migration was Daoc if those that be didn't notice. Entire guilds left and if that didn't even phase anyone high up well SOMETHING is WRONG)

Peace see yall in Neverwinter Nights

PS: Obviously it wasn't all "The man with the Vision's(tm)" fault he is LONG gone and the CRAP just keeps piling up. Or maybe im wrong and this is "The Vision"(tm) seems more like a nightmare for Sony/VI, tsk tsk upper mangement you've made TOO MANY MISTAKES. (if poor buisness practice and horrible ideas on how to treat your customer's isnt enough to stop playing. Neverwinter Nights, World of Warcraft or even Daoc will be MORE than enough to keep me occupied and not paying YOU!)
    Upcoming and outcomes...
    # Feb 02 2002 at 4:34 AM Rating: Good
Well I'll try to make it small. I think we can't blame them for putting up such a good idea cause, in fact, it seems like one. Although, those features, a player can have most of them simply if he knows the "EQ community" well enough. I think they should have put this up since quiet some times or at least build their own community a bit more.

I find this in fact a little pricey for myself but I'm sure there are quiet many peoples out there that are just willing to pay as much or even more for that service than they do for their connection.

Well overall, the feeling this new service gives me is that VI or SOE know that they'll probably be losing some players to the other new MMO that are coming out in the two next years. And, to my sense, this unexpected announcement is pretty much to make as much profit as they can while they're at the top of the market.

Think we can't blame them for being capitalist... they're a company not a humanitary organism. Personally I won't buy that. If I had money to spend on something such, I'd bought an ebayed account a while ago.

    VI's Biggest problem
    # Feb 02 2002 at 3:48 AM Rating: Decent
Well lots of you are Screaming about them trying to squeeze more money out of you. I work for a Major ISP. Expenses are very similar in our business as they'res First the internet connection is mostlikely twice that of a major college. Yes it cost's real money....we are talking about 100k a month. not a year. Then you have paid phone support, the building they are in the phone lines they use and they're 401k's...you have online support. Lan staff, Server Staff. managers on and on. most would be suprised but I bet the actual profit before DaOC was only 3-4 dollars if everyone paid monthly....but that's a discount which cuts into bottom line.

The selling of the expansions helps to pay the coders that write the content. Yes I am sure DaOC has hurt VI and this may be an attempt at getting some of the funds back. But I am looking at the economy and very worried. It looks like layoffs where I work and jobs are very thin in the area...I do have the plan for keeping my eq alive if I get laid off I will be a 10.00 game card every 3 months to keep my chareters from being deleted. But EQ is one of those things I will do without till employment is secured.

The Economy is on the verge of getting real bad. I'm not sure if it will recover or get worse I think it's at a point where it can go either way. Another attack on our economy could send it sliding where a stimulus package may turn it around, VI will feel the effects of this by the number of players that stay....

If I was Sure of my job I would move one or two charters to that server....I like the Idea. I do think it's a little pricey...but I would try it out.

They had a poll a while back, in game I think, and they asked if you'd pay like 30 or 40 bucks for a server where you got great CS and events and junk and quite a few people said yes I guess.

About all of this value added stuff could be done by players. Some sites have been doing this for a while like magelo, the only thing new is that its automatic. Not sure about that map thing but it sounds to me like it will be on a web page also and NOT in game.

VI is hiring people specifically for this, so don't worry about it taking away from the regular game. The $39.95 goes to pay their salaries basically.

So really there are several ways what you are paying for would just take care of itself in future games like:

    1) Automatic "gm" quests via random AI on the fly quests (scripted npcs, no need for human control)

    2) No great need for CS through the avoiding of CS problems like lopsided death penalties and huge xp or other time loss (in both Worlds of Warcraft and Star wars galaxies you pop up with all your stuff, same with Anarchy Online (swg may still have some reason to return to your corpse.. verant is kind of stuck on that) AO had save booths leaving it up to the player, yet another good save.

    3) player tools such as Magelo which do similar value added stuff.

Really when you get down to it you'd still be playing the same old EQ but $29.00 more for some gm attention.. which will do you little good really. It would be worth it to me if something else was different with the funamental game such as all loot being randomized by mob level, medding and hp regen cut by 1/4 or 1/2, etc.

Otherwise its like paying $29.00 for a lack of imagination and to be baby sat.
The other side of the coin
    # Feb 02 2002 at 2:52 AM Rating: Excellent
What many people here fail to see is that VI is implementing a greater "value added" service to 8,000 of its users. In today's economy people do not want "a product" they want "a service." And many times the product is a service.

Many people will pay the extra sir charge for the opportunity to play on this new server becuase they percieve a value in what VI is now offering them.

You have to pay $50 plus to move characters already. This is "free" with the new service.

How much would you pay to have all your hard work in game recognized by the whole EQ community on your server...and make your character a virtual celebrity?

How much would you pay for someone to run your character's and your guilds website?

VI is now doing what many successful buisness models have already done...create a preimium service. You could fly coach or first class; you can buy Old Navy or GAP; you can purchase your Ford f-150 or you can buy the f-150 Harley Davidson. The list goes on and on.

This is just VI diversifying their services. No one is forcing you to buy it. Yet, I will admit it would be nice if these services would be the stanard on all servers, and I am pretty sure VI thought about that. But there are people who get paid alot of money to figure out those cost structures and scenarios...I am not even going to try and break it down.

    Bottom line, it's good business.

And not everyone who plays EQ is a student scraping buy or a hard core gamer who works a part time job only to support his habbit. Many EQers are professionals like myself and have the discrectionairy income to spend on this, and 40 is not alot of money to some people...I mean $40 is the first hour at the bar for me; but I can also assure you that 40 can seem like a steep amount to some people, and there is nothing wrong with that. To many, VI's new service may not seem worth the extra money, but there are some of us who do.

I will strongly consider moving to the Legend server...

Yeah, but it costs you 29 bucks more than your normal subscription the next month. If you don't like it, it cost you 29 bucks more just to get moved from your server and back again (I don't think either way its going to be instant either..)

"How much would you pay to have all your hard work in game recognized by the whole EQ community on your server...and make your character a virtual celebrity?"

.00000001 cents. No one really cares what another player is doing. I don't even know who won the various test of tactics on my server. I was aware of it briefly when they announced it but I don't care. It make no difference in my play experience.

"How much would you pay for someone to run your character's and your guilds website?"

    0. People run it for free now. My character doesn't need a website nor do I have a desire to show off what it has. No one cares about what you have either and they are not going to go look at a site of some 8,000 characters.

"VI is now doing what many successful buisness models have already done...create a preimium service. You could fly coach or first class; you can buy Old Navy or GAP; you can purchase your Ford f-150 or you can buy the f-150 Harley Davidson. The list goes on and on."

Yeah, but the difference is that first class on a plane is NOT coach but with Bilbo the happy airline flunky representive of American Airlines taking the time to talk with you and recognize your existance and put you on a web site (if it was very few people would pay the extra money for it.) First class is a nicer seat, which is the majority of what your time is spent doing on the plane (sitting)

I'd see your point if the server was REALLY different in a way, but its not. Its like every other server but gms schedule little events, which is something players have been able to do themselves for 2 years (and some do, on sites with calendars)

The only valid comparison I see between this and "first class" on a plane would be that the people paying $29.95 more for this server will know that part of that cost is to keep out the rabble who can only afford coach.

"This is just VI diversifying their services. No one is forcing you to buy it. Yet, I will admit it would be nice if these services would be the stanard on all servers, and I am pretty sure VI thought about that."

They did, but its too expensive. A verant rep once said "have you ever had an hour of CS in one month? One hour total even if its not all at the same time? Well, there went your $9.89 charge right there. After that we are losing money on you."

"But there are people who get paid alot of money to figure out those cost structures and scenarios...I am not even going to try and break it down."

    Yep.

"Many EQers are professionals like myself and have the discrectionairy income to spend on this, and 40 is not alot of money to some people"

Yeah, but a professional has even less time. What happens when as a professional you work until say 7 pm eastern most of the time and of course everyone being paid to do the GM events is on pacific time and has already gone home for the day? Then you are paying $39.95 to see your character on a web page and being able to go and look at the zones he went through that day and where he is bound, if you are lucky I guess you can do that from work!

Its not affording the amount of money itself but rather what you get for paying more. Its like I said above, if you are still in an area JUST LIKE COACH on the plane but now you have more customer service and they play charades or other games with you is it worth paying the price of first class? No, its not. I'd just not see the value unless I was actually getting more on the server like some new zones which were only there, lower xp loss on death, faster medding or hp regen or heck even all your 8 characters getting the 2nd horse or something. For a premium cost I need more premium, not more babysitting or notoriety. Those have no value to me.

Man, you are WAY out of touch with the VAST majority of EQ players. It's all about status on EQ, Levels and items and status and gaining a reputation. It's a major part of all MMOG's. If it didn't matter to you, go play BG2. :)
RE: The other side of the coin
    # Feb 02 2002 at 6:49 AM Rating: Default
I agree, I've already decided I'm going to the legends server. I play on SZ, and I try my hardest to get a reputation on that server. But, even if that wasn't part of the server, I'd still join for all the events they'll have. We've all found ourselves bored out of our mind w/ EQ, hoping something new will happen. Remember the Halloween events? It changed the entire mood for players on SZ, that's for sure. Everyone had a blast w/ that, even the low lvls, I love having unique items that people will rarely see. And, having an item named after me? That'd kick so much ***.

The only thing I'm wondering is if I can play on the other servers still. I would like to keep in touch w/ all my friends from SZ and VZ. Anyway, I'm pretty excited about the Legends server. I do agree the price is a bit much, but I'm willing to pay it if it's going to be as great as they're saying.

Yeah, you can play on any server when you sign up for Legends.
    Why continue to bash Verant?

They are dancing to SONY's tune. Bash Sony.

I get all that now for 10 bucks without them hosting a thing. Essentially this is asking for you to pay for web hosting services, because in game there is no way they will do anything remotely different with regard to how to deal with conflicts, lost items, and all the other issues where they say "sorry, can't help you" now. This is a totally ridiculous thing...
