My alt is L80, maxed in both skinning and mining. I'm thinking about going on a safari binge to load up on leather and minerals for one last bump to my finances, then dropping one to take up jewel crafting - been banking all my gems all along. Question is - which? Skinning has always been a nice reliable income stream, whereas mining has been good but spotty. OTOH, if I keep mining, it should help defray the cost of the jewel crafting..
Anybody got an opinion they'd share?

I'd keep mining as you noted it supplies JC so they make a good pair.
Otherwise... if you've already got someone that can do mining/herbing quick IE a druid who can do the herbing in flight form that can feed the other it doesn't really matter.
Skinning will be needed if you want to do LW on someone down the road as buying all the materials can be pretty pricey

I would keep mining as JC can require a lot of ore if you decide to use it to make money. If you do decide to use JC for profit, partnering it with alchemy is quite useful. Once you get to a comfortable level of gold, you can buy ore to prospect and use alchemy to transmute meta and blue quality gems. This varies server to server but can be very lucrative.
At least on my server, the mining bots are back, and ore is going for about half what it did last month. Gems and enchanting mats have seen a knock-on hit, but are maintaining 2/3 to 3/4 last month's price.
Yeah, the mining bots are back in full force on my server too. Elementium has dropped to 25-50g/stack depending on the day of the week. I'm averaging about 1/2-3/4 of last month's profit as well, so it sounds like a similar situation. I'm well over gold cap though across all my toons, so now I just play the AH out of habit.
If I keep the mining, I'll be doing it as much to support the jewel crafting. there's much more profit to be had in leather Heavy leather is still consistently running 40G/stack an even medium is pulling a healthy 30-35. Best prices are for savage, but its a lot harder to farm because its spread out more and the beasties fight back better.
Enchanting is nice to go with Jewelcrafting. It will magnify the amount of money you can make off of the ore you prospect.

Surprised to see this thresd resurface. Basically, I did as I planned, flogged the skinning and mining until I had over 20K gold in the till. Then I dropped skinning and took up jewel crafting. By prospecting most of my own mats, i managed to actually increase my till somewhat while leveling my J C through 525 - only to learn that the best gems I can craft are soulbound and cannot be sold or even given away and there's no demand for 99% of the gems you CAN sell . So, while it looks like I could continue to incrementally increase my wealth with the JC, it'd be like trying to put out a forest fire with an eye-dropper and a thimble.
Ergo, I'm now thinking of another career change to either blacksmithing or engineering, both of which would dovetail with my mining.
I have no quibble with the two-profession active limit, but itd be nice if the'd give you an achievement based on the total number of professions your alt has mastered, even when now inactive.

With Mist of Pandaria coming out soon I wouldn't drop Jewelcrafting. At the beginning of the expansion and probably for most of its ilfespan, JC will bring you excellent profits. Until very recently there was high demand (on my server) at least for cut gems. And you need to have the popular blue-quality cuts as well, people rarely buy green quality gems. But I wouldn't drop it just because you aren't making money right now.

Very good advice! And if they continue the trend where you have to do dailies to purchase the best cuts, make sure you start doing them as soon as you can. My jewelcrafter is an alt, so I didn't do dailies right away in Cataclysm and lost out on a lot. Still made tons of gold though!
The gathering profs make a killing the first month or so too. I made out like a bandit with herbalism on my druid. Mining and Skinning probably do just as well.
I'm working herbalism and mining, both of which I intend to level and maintain through at least level 60. When I do drop mining for either inscription or alchemy, I have no intention of being a struggling apprentice..
