I have had my fishing skill at 450 for a while, before you could only fish in area's appropiate to your fishing level, however that has changed.

Now you can fish anywhere at any level, do the fishing dailies even at level 1 skill.

As for cooking/first aid you still have to have a certain level to make certain recipes/bandages.

I am wondering: is there still an advantage in having fishing skill 450?

You can only catch fish with a fishing skill. Certain fish demand a fishing skill to be caught successfully.

Which fish are those? For example: when my Druid had a very low fishing skill, she could catch the salmon in Northrend, maybe it took a bit longer, bit still.

You can catch fish from any school at a fishing skill of 1. Higher fishing skill allows you to catch fish more successfully when you are fishing in open water.

I know, that was my point, you can catch anything now, at lower level it only takes a bit longer, that's all.

Take an alt with no skill to a level 70+ zone and see what you catch when you don't fish from the pools. I'll save you the trouble - sick fish, tangled fishing lines and chunks of ripped sails - ie/grey garbage.

Max fishing isn't needed if you're not much of a tradeskill/cooking person, but it's still worth working on - just fish while waiting for a boat or BG or instance and you'll be maxed out in no time.

The new fishing dailies are a great boon to non-maxed characters since part of the reward is an increase in skill - I got my bank toon doing the fishing and cooking dailies (Horde - Ally ones suck with a capital S) and it'll have a maxed out cooking skill in no time (plus the free meat from the boxes and occasional bonus potion from the bags).

I was mostly commenting on what Magilicotti said about "certain fish demand a fishing skill to be caught successfully." Only fish in open water need a specific skill to be caught successfully. But basically, the only advantage to having a max level fishing skill is speed.
