I played WoW when it first was released. At the end of my trial period I did not renew. Thinking back it seems like the reason I chose was having to chose a single gathering and a single crafting skill.

I decided to pick up an MMO for the winter and bought ffxiv. What a disappointment. I am going to either go back to LOTRO or WoW and was wondering if you are still limited in crafting and gather classes to 1 of each, or if at the time I was just to new to the game to know how to field multiples?

You can only have 2 professions, both of which can be gathering professions if you like. I suggest at least having one gathering profession if you're new.

Still not sure if it's a good or bad thing you can't have multiple trade skills on the same toon like you could in EQ.

Pro - cuts down on the arms race a little bit - imagine the horror of people who could get all the bonuses from all the trade/gathering skills at once

Con - the need for multiple skills caused me to roll multiple toons and I rather enjoy most of them - if I could have done it all on my main then I doubt I'd have as many active alts.

It'd make a great gold/resource sink (as well as give peeps additional stuff to do) by letting toons have a higher limit of professions, but Blizz would have to dump a lot of the special bonuses each profession gives to avoid what I noted in above.

You also can level Cooking, Fishing, and soon to be Archeology.

Also, it is normal to have alts.

My hunter is a miner / herbalist (gatherer). I have a couple AH toons which have enchanting to DE for cash. My main is a Tailor / Engineer. A few characters are high level fisherman and cooks. My other alts tend to swap professions because I enjoy the change and like leveling professions.

As you can see, you are limited on one character, but you probably will end up with more than one. That opens the possibility of one character making things the other character can use. Wow is a great game, and this is an exciting time to be leveling, with the expansion just around the corner and new events happening soon.

Thanks for the info. I imagine here in the relatively near future I will give it another go. Need something 'new' for the winter. FFXI and Lotro are pretty worn out to me now and FFXIV is one of the worst games I have ever played

I have trouble understanding "for the Winter". I've been playing for almost six years, and still haven't gotten tired of WoW. Could it be that you are easily bored?

In any case, I wouldn't pick WoW for crafting, since there are so many other aspects to the game. It just seems a bit stupid to base your decision on such a small portion of the game.

Let's look at your question, though. You can have two professions, with any mixture between crafting and/or gathering professions. Enchanting is both a crafting and a gathering profession, Tailoring doesn't have (or need) an associated gathering profession. Fishing (something anyone can have) is a gathering profession with no associated craft (except for minor use in alchemy), and you can still have your teo primary professions as well.

You have a lot of possibilities, but generally if you choose a crafting skill and want to gather your own materials, then yes. You are limited to one of each. I just think that that's a very narrow view of the game.
