Guardians of the GalaxyFollow

Yup, that was Extremis Iron Man. He couldn't beat the extremis guys, so he became one. It was after Secret Invasion he "rebooted" himself so Norman Osbourne, as new director of SHIELD, couldn't get his hands on his data.

The Invincible Iron Man run, that began with Extremis, was actually pretty good. But I'm a sucker for Warren Ellis' sci-fi stuff (Planetary is probably my favorite series of all time, Transmetropolitan is a fantastic sci-fi/gonzo journalism mashup, and his work on The Authority is a must-read).

The whole needing to reboot himself after the events of Secret Invasion, while admittedly lame, was karma for Tony being such a douche during Civil War.

For me, it was a bit of both (a lot of both really). The cost of following so many stories, when it was really clear that the entire reason for them doing so many crossovers was to force people to buy more books and there wasn't any real benefit story wise. But also when they started seriously ******** with characters was my cue to get out. What had always made Marvel better than DC in my mind was the consistency of their characters. I mean, they changed over time, but they were generally gradual and story based. Also, they interacted with each other in a single well defined and maintained universe.

Somewhere along the line Marvel decided to start spinning off different characters into multiple different timelines and alternate story lines (I assume also to require you to buy yet more books). So it was like "hey! Let's retell the story of Spider Man, but with him being female, or a robot, or whatever. It'll be so cool!). It really wasn't though. The did a whole series of alternate future characters, and most of them sucked. Those that were cool, kinda weren't anyway because there wasn't enough of the world they were being told in to make it feel big and real. Marvel "solved" this problem by then having these one-shot alternate versions start popping up in their "real" universe.

That's when they jumped the shark IMO. They were more interested in randomly experimenting with the characters and consistency was thrown out the window. They went from a universe where everything kinda had to be approved and no big changes could be made without making sure it wouldn't break anything else in the larger universe to one where "anything goes, cause we don't care about continuity anymore". The irony is that Marvel started doing this literally right after DC spent an enormous amount of time and effort undoing their franchise from one that followed that "random crap all over the place" model to one in which there was one tight and consistent world.

For readers who enjoyed Marvel because their universe told a bigger story, it destroyed all interest in their franchise.

Dan Slott did a pretty good job dealing with Spidey after that whole One More Day debacle, and even the whole Spider-Ock stuff isn't exactly horrible, though there are somethings that quickly got under my skin. As far as jumping the shark ... well, these are stories involving people who shoot lasers out of their eyes and juggle locomotives. Sharks been jumped a long time ago.

You people's standards are too high.

Actually, my comments were more directed at creating alternate timeline versions of characters and then finding contrived ways to have them appear in the "main" timeline. Doing so every once in awhile is a neato "what if" kind of thing. Doing so with every major character (and a bunch of minor ones) in some cases multiple times? Not so much.

Oh. And my "that's why I quit" comment wasn't actually directed at Iron man, so much as Norman Osbourne being director of SHIELD. Cause you can just only take so much of that sort of thing.

That's.... terrible! The one from the Ultimates or another version? Not that it would be any less embarassing either way, I'm just curious.
Did they replace the 'original' Fury or do they now have both?


Maybe it's really a good thing I stopped reading Marvel a few years back.

There was a Q&A session prior to the release of the trailer. It blew the hell up. I really liked Gunn's, Bautista's, and even Diesel's answers to some of the questions. Looks like it's going to be a ridiculous 80s Sci Fi action flick. I mean, moreso than from the first trailer.
