It seems awfully familiar. Yet I can't place anything similar to it.

Because it has a fairly generic setup? Droves of wannabe adorable minions, a tough guy forced to take care of cute little kids, and don't we already have a villain centered movie coming out--one that incidentally appears much funnier?
I remember seeing the early previews and expecting a movie that centered primarily on a rivalry between the two main villains. It seemed acceptable then. Later the kids were introduced and I realized it would be all about the misadventures of the children and Gru babysitting them. Done to death.
I saw the trailer before Toy Story 3... it appears to be Universal Studio's extremely desperate attempt to make a Pixar movie.
