Can't beat Hamilton for real sci fi done recently, and agree with many others already ID'd. Three other names/series come to mind.

Elizabeth Hayden's Rhapsody Series is an enjoyable read, once you get past the initial weirdness of the 1st ^^

With so much TV ending up online these days, it is pretty much in your power what you want to watch and when. Does your area of Europe not carry anything like the Sci-Fi channel in the US? I figured most large cable providers may have something similar.

I've read the first three parts, it's definitely a good series. I should try and find the following parts, see if it's good too.

Yeah, with the digital tv, there's an option to watch the sci fi channel. Unfortunately, it's a local channel which exists almost entirely of continuous reruns of Star Trek, all series, Firefly, Angel and Dark Angel. That's pretty much it, I kid you not.
It might improve though, I'm keeping an eye on it from time to time.
It is ofcourse impossible to expect all the new series in the US to instantly show on local channels here, although the BBC used to be pretty quick about it, and there's not all that much created here anymore. Apart from Doctor Who.
I'm actually tempted to start watching the French channels, might be something worth seeing there, although imported series are always dubbed in a rather awful way.
