Being kind of dragoned out, I'd never had bought myself the first book of this series, but my husband give it to me as a gift. I've read now read the first two and am waiting on three: Deborah Wolfe - The Dragons Legacy and The Forbidden City. The writing is colorful and vivid. The characters are well formed and endearing.
I also just finished up the Broken Earth Trilogy by NK Jeminism. They were ok. I loved the storyline - that's what kept me going through three books. The characters and writing were only so-so.
I just started reading The Wind-Up Bird Chronicles by Haruki Murakami. I have no idea where it's going to take me....

Edited to add: McGuire also writes as Mira Grant, and under that name she publishes science fiction/horror. Science horror. But not stupid like Crichton.

But I am reading quite a cool book about Arabs, called Arabs.
It's called Arabs: a 3000 year bla bla bla but I do recommend it.

Oh, you're actually reading them in order? That's crazy. Generally they get less tightly edited afte the fourth, but they're still good fun.
I had no idea who Seanan McGuire is, but I just checked out her bibliography and holy **** does she pump out books. Is she perhaps some kind of machine?
I liked the writing, but if you didn't then definitely don't read her other books because they;re considerably worse. Actually, my one problem with the series is the storytelling, specifically the pacing. Too much of the main character's arc happens in the second book, and so she spends most of the third book not really going anywhere until the ending.

Right now, i'm rereading a series by Conn Iggluden, fictional based on Julius Caesar. Its not bad.

I need a good space opera. Been reading Leviathan Wakes because I liked the show but can't seem to get into the book. It's not scifi enough for me so far.

Hmm, a book thread. Once Terry Pratchett died, I decided to start in on Discworld. It's been hit or miss, depending on the book. The Watch books are clearly the best, with the Death books as a close second, and Rincewind third. Not a fan of the Witch books, and I haven't made it to the industrial revolution ones yet.
Space opera? How about the classics, like Dune, or Foundation?
