Steve Bannon Says the News Media should keep it's mouth shut. NYTimes story on his remarks

I first saw this on Twitter and it's getting a lot of attention.

Also the Doomsday Clock is 30 seconds closer to Midnight.

Glad I squeaked in under the slowly-descending garage door, then. A couple of friends have invited me to stay indefinitely should the need arise. I'd just have to decide between Edmondton, Montreal, or Trump's apocalyptic hell on earth.

We can just take the wall Mexico is so totally going to pay for and build it a little further north.

Actually, I'd think that comparing the crowd of the first black President to that of the first female President might be interesting.

Of course they're going to count crowd sizes, they always do, and they will always show side by side, because we love comparisons and they have 24 hours to fill.

Generally a President and the administration doesn't care, because it's not something you should care about. No one else really cares either.

The number of people in the crowd at the inauguration is something I care about deeply. The TV said it was important.

What do we think about Trump's executive order banning people from Syria, Iraq, Iran (lol), Sudan, Libya, Somalia and Yemen?

Maybe Gbaji would like to defend this policy, seeing as how he voted for Trump.

He'll have to defend it in the same breath where he explains closing out war veterans who fought on our side don't deserve to come here.

That should be entertaining.

Blanket bans are stupid and all, but I find it funny that the Internet and Media are making a big deal about how Trump didn't put Saudi Arabia or Turkey, Egypt, etc. on the list. Implying it's because he does business with them. When the more accurate reasoning is it's just par for the course for how the US treats those countries compared to the others in the region.

And Iran's response ban of US Citizens. That'll show Trump. Smiley: lol

This is the same guy trying to start a trade war with our second largest export market and saying we should pull out of NATO. Assuming that Trump is excluding those nations primarily due to some sort of established foreign policy precedent and not due to plain self-interest seems a little naive.

You can't ban people from nations who were actual 9/11 hijackers, because if you don't have terror attacks, you don't get enough conservative turnout. It's not about his business interests at all!

It's a damn good thing Obama signed a previous law where the list of countries it refers to just happen to be ones that aren't in Trump's self interest, then. Well, sorta.

Quote:
According to the draft copy of Trump's executive order, the countries whose citizens are barred entirely from entering the United States is based on a bill that Obama signed into law in December 2015.

Obama signed the Visa Waiver Program Improvement and Terrorist Travel Prevention Act as part of an omnibus spending bill. The legislation restricted access to the Visa Waiver Program, which allows citizens from 38 countries who are visiting the United States for less than 90 days to enter without a visa.

Though outside groups such as the American Civil Liberties Union and NIAC Action — the sister organization of the National Iranian American Council — opposed the act, the bipartisan bill passed through Congress with little pushback.

Section 3c
Quote:
(c) To temporarily reduce investigative burdens on relevant agencies during the review period described in subsection (a) of this section, to ensure the proper review and maximum utilization of available resources for the screening of foreign nationals, and to ensure that adequate standards are established to prevent infiltration by foreign terrorists or criminals, pursuant to section 212(f) of the INA, 8 U.S.C. 1182(f), I hereby proclaim that the immigrant and nonimmigrant entry into the United States of aliens from countries referred to in section 217(a)(12) of the INA, 8 U.S.C. 1187(a)(12), would be detrimental to the interests of the United States, and I hereby suspend entry into the United States, as immigrants and nonimmigrants, of such persons for 90 days from the date of this order (excluding those foreign nationals traveling on diplomatic visas, North Atlantic Treaty Organization visas, C-2 visas for travel to the United Nations, and G-1, G-2, G-3, and G-4 visas).

INA, 8 U.S.C. 1187(a)(12)
Quote:
12) Not present in Iraq, Syria, or any other country or area of concern
(A) In generalExcept as provided in subparagraphs (B) and (C)—
(i) the alien has not been present, at any time on or after March 1, 2011—
(I) in Iraq or Syria;
(II) in a country that is designated by the Secretary of State under section 4605(j) of title 50 (as continued in effect under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (50 U.S.C. 1701 et seq.)), section 2780 of title 22, section 2371 of title 22, or any other provision of law, as a country, the government of which has repeatedly provided support of acts of international terrorism; or
(III) in any other country or area of concern designated by the Secretary of Homeland Security under subparagraph (D); and
(ii) regardless of whether the alien is a national of a program country, the alien is not a national of—
(I) Iraq or Syria;
(II) a country that is designated, at the time the alien applies for admission, by the Secretary of State under section 4605(j) of title 50 (as continued in effect under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (50 U.S.C. 1701 et seq.)), section 2780 of title 22, section 2371 of title 22, or any other provision of law, as a country, the government of which has repeatedly provided support of acts of international terrorism; or
(III) any other country that is designated, at the time the alien applies for admission, by the Secretary of Homeland Security under subparagraph (D).
The reason for the "sort of" above is that most of the list depends on the designation of the Sec of State(and Trump's hasn't been confirmed) or the DHS Sec(which has). If the list has been changed in the several days between Jan 20th and Jan 27th, then sure, it's probably on Trump. But if not, then he didn't even pick the list and this is one heck of a dial back.

And now I'm over an hour past my bedtime, so I'm off to bed. If anyone wants to look up that part, go ahead. Otherwise, I'll let this drop further and say I've tried.
