Ya, but the inauguration didn't change anything.

You're right, but that didn't stop people from arguing that all calls to fix the EC were disingenuous cries to change the election results.

You're right, it was wrong of me to say vote.

It can and does hand victory to the candidate a plurality of people do not want. If the country were made up of only 538 electors, it might make sense, but the nation is made of citizens, and ignoring the wishes of constituents makes for bad governance.

Trump and his cronies are blatantly lying about something as trivial as how many people watched the inauguration despite the fact that all the numbers from every source are easily checked and proves them wrong. Not to mention the multitude of times that Trump was caught being either completely ignorant of the facts, or outright lying about them during the election. Yet, it's the left that needs to start being honest? Are you ******* kidding me?

So what? The point here (which ties into the point I made in my previous post) is that it does not matter how large or small the crowd is.
the so what is not that any of us actually cares about the crowd size, it's that trump and spicer felt they had to lie about it. That's what's disturbing. No one would have gotten larger crowds than obama, but they talk about Crowd size every time. The weird thing is that Trump cared about it.

"Who cares about numbers?" isn't the question. "Why is the President of the United States so pathologically obsessed about every minor thing that he blatantly and repeatedly lies and why doesn't the GOP care that this is Trump's primary reaction to conflict?" is the question.

It's just funny how he goes on a tangent about how dishonest the media is to defend a blatant lie told by Spicer.

Trump's base does not care about the accuracy of facts or statistics to the same degree that many democrats do, they prefer first hand experience because they do not trust people who say that they are experts who know better. They have not had first hand experience with many problems that those on the left say are problems, and think the focus on them is being driven for alterior motives. (Ex, I have not experienced racism, so therefore it does not exist, or is justified by a group's collective behavior)

Long story short, no, Trump does not need to be honest in order to keep his base happy, he just has to channel their collective voice. Betrayal of that is way more damning then simple lies.

Because it does a good job at painting the mainstream press as adversarial to him, which undermines their long-term credibility even if they're correct. It takes air time away from coverage of other more controversial policy decisions that could paint him in a bad light. Making outlandish claims like this is his trademark way to get free press time for pretty much whatever he wants.

It's basically a smoke-and-mirrors stunt that's been remarkably effective. He does it well.

That'll easily be the smartest thing he says today. Dippin' Dots suck. Little freezer-burned ice cream turds.
They're not that bad. I mean, they're not exactly good. But turds is a little much.

I suppose that managing to make ice cream "not exactly good" is an accomplishment in of itself.

Re: TPP -- It looks as though Australia and some other TPP nations are courting China to fill the US's place in a agreement that was originally intended as a hedge against them so... yay! Great job! Smiley: laugh

Understood. But, by all accounts, Trump was legitimately irate about this and the push back was legitimate.

That said, speaking of the media, it sounds as though CNN isn't going to bother covering his conferences live any longer unless they know in advance exactly what they're going to be about. They skipped the Spicer whine festival over the weekend and just recorded it for later.

Nah, if the whole "draining the swamp" thing already being abandoned isn't enough then there is no amount of betrayal that is going to affect these people. You only need to look at the people that went from "worst thing ever" to "give him a chance" to see that.

Yeah, this is going to be the interesting part going forward. He's increasingly hostile towards China, but at the same time undermining the support we have in the region. I get the move from a domestic perspective, but it's going to make "containing China" more difficult in the future.

Which is probably for the best. I think we got to see exactly what a Spicer news conference is going to look like going forward. If there were any lingering doubts about how highly Trump regards the media this pretty much ended those.

I'm hoping it'll escalate. Fewer people show up for the things, then Trump goes all in and replaces Spicer with a sock-monkey that screams "LIES! LIES! LIES!" when you pull the string. Then the remaining press get offended and just start recording the "conference" as well. End-game is 50 cameras recording an unpaid intern endlessly pulling on the string for an hour, with clips and transcripts available on youtube.

Would be good times. Smiley: popcorn

It's not just a domestic issue. It's also an issue of sovereignty of nations vs. multinational corporations(and could have been devastating from an environmental impact angle) and an issue of the copyright laws buried in there that could have killed things like political video remixes, game mods, memes and even been a threat to social media and citizen journalism. Bernie had a few things to say against it as well.

Personally, I'm willing to accept having to find other ways to deal with China if it avoids us shooting ourselves in both feet.

For the record, I knew there were dangerous copyright things in there, but the memes and game mods thing is just something I heard yesterday(and I haven't verified the language that would do that myself, though I moderately trust the source). I swear I didn't oppose it to protect memes. That's just a bonus. Smiley: laugh

Speaking of memes, I wonder if anyone has made an Animal Farm image macro along the lines of "Facts Good, Alternative Facts Better."

This is probably a good thing, as it means his resources will be fruitlessly spinning their wheels trying to find the one guy who voted 40 time in an irrelevant district, rather than doing other destructive activities.

Trump said he's going to send "the Feds" to Chicago to stop crime. I'm glad that Trump is taking on direct responsibility for the Chicago crime rate and will be happy to consider each shooting a failure on his part since he has just promised to fix it.
