It didn't really feel like a halftime show without some kind of animal, or at least someone in an animal suit. Where were the giant dancing sharks?

Lame. Smiley: disappointed

Californians are spoiled. They spend years complaining about not having rain, then they finally get some and you'd think you'd hear some gratitude. Nope, just complaining about how their dam is going to collapse. Smiley: oyvey

Oh they'll probably just find a way to complain about that too. Look at the whole Salton Sea thing. Big man-made flood brings lots of waterfront property to Californians who didn't have it before, and it's all blah blah blah dead fish stink, to much salt, something something noxious sulfur smell.

Smiley: disappointed

Seriously. Fires, floods, earthquakes. I don't think I'll ever understand why people would want to live somewhere an Avatar is actively trying to kill 'em.

Well it is sunny there, so that's a plus. Probably trapped there though. I mean, if you're a hippie living in Cali where else are you even going to go? There's thousands of miles of rednecks between you and the nearest bastion of warmth and liberal thought.

I spent 7 years there and was happy we had Base Housing, because then our water came from California Canal system. I spent 3 months living off base and my ex would fill up jugs of water on base and bring them home for me to use for drinking and cooking. When my 1 month old would let me have time to take a shower, I had to hold my nose and get in and out before the smell of sulfur made me sick.

As much as I loved the weather and mountains, I'm glad to be back east where I don't worry well water. We just have to worry about aging pipes that suddenly bust and leave sink holes in downtown Baltimore.

My drinking water comes from snow melt. I have no complaints.

Re: bagels, I dunno, New Yorkers assure me they're inferior here. Not knowing any better I still enjoy them.

In Los Angeles, the Bagel and Pizza argument is pointless, as nobody here eats carbs.

It's not really about messing up the bagels, as there's just not the same kind of culture here. You don't see bagel, pretzel, hotdog, etc cart vendors around here (like at all). So you can pretty much only get such things at either chain stores (which are pretty bleh), or "upscale" "trendy" specialty bakeries (ie: expensive). On the flip side, we have tacos, burritos, and tomales all over the place. I'm not sure if "guy selling home made tomales out of the back of a van in a mall parking lot" is quite the equivalent of a bagel cart, but there you have it.

How long has it been since you lived in the area? Not sure which part of California you were in, but I distinctly (very distinctly) recall there was a period of time in the early to mid 80s, where the water quality in San Diego was really really bad. Like hold your nose bad. Like you could smell the sulfur in the pipes when not even running them. You could smell it on your clothes after washing them. Yeah... bad.

Hasn't been like that for 30 years or so though. Not sure what they did, but they significantly improved things. I have no issues just drinking filtered fridge water.

You're saying that there's something strange about putting your salad in a lettuce wrap?

I think the New York comment was about the water. I've seen it on a few Food Network shows, something in the water supposedly makes it better. I can only guess that the New York water is so polluted that the people growing up there just get so used to those added flavors and think something is wrong when they aren't there.

Yeah, bagels seem like a pretty standard baked good. But I have little opinion regarding bagels. Maybe the ones in Skokie are to die for but bagels aren't something I eat much of and if someone say New York bagels are the best bagels this side of Israel -- sure, why not.
