People get trolled all the time.
Which is where this gets difficult.

If a "get back in the kitchen" comment is not seriously believed by the commenter and only made to provoke a reaction telling them to respect women doesn't do any good. If they're next going over to some World of Warcraft forums and calling the game easy-mode, then getting into a random dungeon group and intentionally killing everyone, the problem has little to do with whether or not they actually respect women, at most it's a part of a larger theme.

Which is where you feel stuck between a rock and a hard place. Standing up to someone may be ideal, but if it's a troll it only fuels their fire worsening the situation.

*sigh*

Smiley: frown

I mean really, do you think someone with a tag of izashid29 or ************** or BEATandDELETE really hates women or is just a jackass to everyone?

That's it. It might not be cool on any level, but they're not doing it to be cool. There's no magic comment that would make them say "Gee, I realize now that saying you need to make me a sandwich and let me rest the plate on your head as you orally satisfy me and I play WoW because you're too stupid to understand games was hurtful. I had no idea. I'm sorry."

They know it's hurtful. That's why they're saying it.

If we believe WIFExPUNCHERx69 does, in fact, punch wives (their own, or just randomly chosen?) do we also need to take LONGxDONGxJOHNSON serious and believe he is, in fact, a pirate?

I'm not specifically pointing out that you guys are jerks, but yeah you guys are jerks ;) Joph gets it. I'm not trying to be whiny or to QQ. I'm not even angry nor did I write the piece to be an angry post. I'm simply saying that if you see this kind of stuff happening all I ask is for a little bit of help, from one gamer to another. If you don't see this stuff happen, awesome. If you do and you notice it going too far, say something. That's all.

Going along with whoever wrote it before (yes I'm lazy and not scrolling back through the last page... Smiley: tongue) when they said that something along the lines of certainly addressing it in a group, guild, or real life kind of setting, but wouldn't chase down every idiot in a general chat channel in a MMO.

Doesn't really matter what you do, because you'll be damned for it anyway. You don't say anything, and you accept the behavior and therefor are the bad guy. You speak up about it and you believe women are weak princesses and are the bad guy. You treat a woman as an equal (IE: As a jerk) and you believe girls are inferior and are a bad guy. I'm just going to pick my poison and accept that the other 66% think I'm Hitler for it.

A troll isn't some pinnacle of rationality, dispassionately picking the remark that'll hurt the most out of a velvet bag. The things you troll people with reflect what hurts, sure - those of you who don't believe society is sexist might ask yourselves why sexist jokes are the thing that are thought to be especially painful to women - but mostly they reflect what you and your mates think is funny. I'm sure they're both true, though contempt might be a better word.

By the way, just because you make a black joke doesn't mean you don't seriously believe that blacks are inferior; the opposite is true. Plenty of those jokes over at stormfront. Humour is a powerful, versatile and incredibly complex tool, and it can certainly be used to entrench your status and remind social inferiors of theirs. Those who do so are far from all being trolls in the first place.

Whether calling people out is effective depends on a lot of things (e.g. as Jophiel says the condemenation of those you see as your peers is much more effectove); but pretty much no-one will keep doing something if it meets with a universally negative reception. I don't think getting those who were trolling her to stop was the reason she posted those responses, though. Second though: I don't think its particularly helpful to have this lady be the centerpiece of these discussions.

Have you considered that boiling your responses down to these three categories might obliterate nuances that might explain your universally negative reception? It's entirely possible to tell someone talking **** to shut up in a way that demeans the victim. If you called a victorian lady a worthless **** her husband would surely object, but his victorian attitude would be pretty evident in the way he did so.
