This reminds me of when my generation of FFXI players, the PS2'ers, came into the game.
Before I started FFXI (when my eyes were still planted heavily on Wish), I lurked in several message boards relating to FFXI, and I saw a large number of opinions.
Some people felt that the "n00bs" that would come from not being on PC would ruin the game, some felt that this would cause the market to skyrocket, and some felt that with the sudden influx of players there would be more opportunities to meet new friends.
In the end, prices pretty much stayed the same (till the Jerry clan arrived), and the idiot population of FFXI didn't increase all that much. Even now, I can think off of the top of my head some INCREDIBLY good, and INCREDIBLY nice players who were part of this "second wave" of players.
And I am sure I am not the only one who can.
I say, let FFXI be expanded to another console, the new XBox360.
Adding new people to Vana'diel's mix has never hurt anything (PS2'ers, and the EU rush we had a while ago), and if anything it could bring new people into FFXI who weren't able to play before. A lot of people usually have one main (modern) system they play, and maybe a second one. Rarely, out of all the gamers that I have come across, does anyone have more than one, MAYBE two modern era systems.
And besides, I take this as a good thing, that shows the strength of Final Fantasy XI. If you take a look at the other MMO's out there, you will realize rather quickly three glaring facts.
First is that the granddaddy of all MMO's (not MUDs), EverQuest, is going through some rough times. Recently, SoE has consolidated a LOT of the servers, cutting the existing total in half.
Second, the initial population that joined up with WoW has hit something approaching a peak. A lot of gamers have gotten fed up with the constant downtime of the servers (tho I will give Blizzard credit that they are finally getting on the ball and fixing things), and the fact that the game is rather easy to get through and max out in for a seasoned/power gamer.
Third, FFXI, if you take a look at the Vana'diel census from last year (before EQ2, WoW, and several other MMOs hit the market), and this year's census, you can easily see that there are still roughly the same amount of people playing. Granted, FFXI did take a hit from WoW and EQ2, but the numbers are quickly shoring back up as people grow dissatisfied with those games. Everyone can name at LEAST one person who has come back to FFXI, having gotten bored with another MMO out there.
The fact that SE is developing FFXI (and TetraMaster) for the XBox360, the fact that the "Frontal Mission" MMO project is still being made, and the rumors of a new expansion pack being made, all show that SE has excellant faith in FFXI's future.
...and I am digressing here >.<;;
To answer the OP's question, yes, I think it is a wonderful idea, and I cannot wait to meet the people who come in from the Xbox360 generation.
EDIT: I can't spell TetraMaster...what is wrong with me?^^;;
