The other day somebody said that our party would be complete when we had a crack dealer. I quickly learned that he(or she) was referring to a BRD or RDM and their ability to supply the party with that addictive MP. I was totally ROFL. Is that a new term or am I just out of the loop? Either way, I could totally see the RDMs in the AF standing on the corner supplying us with the goods...

Actually RDMs get high on their own supply, I mean have you seen an RDM using Refresh in town full MP and just browsing the AH.

the term has existed for year; the first time I heard it was concerning enchanters and their clarity/KEI spells in EQ (that game's versions of refresh/ballad).
Maybe it existed before, but I wouldn't know about that.

In the hm... middle years of its existence, crack dealer, and crack addicts, often refered to the people who sold KEI (a spell lasting up to 4 hours) and those who just wouldn't xp without it.

lmfao.

True. I hate it when I don't have Refresh going, I'll cast it until I'm full again. You know, just in case Kirin decides to attack Jeuno or something, you can't get caught with your pants down on these things.

Yeah I think the people selling KEI in EQ were more like crack dealers than RDM's are from what I remember. They used to hang around in the towns and had "turf" wars with each other with shouts of how "HEY IM ALREADY SELLING KEI AT THE BANK" etc etc....

RDM are more like hippys, happy to pass their bong round for no personal gain... well the good ones are, the bad ones are just erm.... help me out here lol.

I guess I was on a good server hehe...
We only had one acti who was being an *** about it, as far as I know. She was idiotic enough to actually call GMs on people who were giving it for free (until the GMs quit responding)... which happenned quite often, as every time she set up shop, 2-3 other enchies would start announcing free KEI.
Much fun was had griefing that little suspected plat seller... :D

True or the shadow lord decides to kill people off for inflating AH prices.

Edit: BTW we missed you Sioux, nothing better than that crazy sarcastic humor a Canadian Elvaan RDM can bring, welcome back! ^^

Bards are the real hippies - if RDM's pass the bong, we actually hotbox the mages. Get too close to a bard, and you'll probably get refresh just by proximity! Also, we just want everyone to sit down, relax, and listen to our music.

And yes, we're just that awesome that we can hotbox open areas.

lmao! the turf wars were everywhere until a few got suspended for running the bots, then it kinda calmed a bit. KEI is merely today's pot. Clairvoyance is the new crack. Good thing nobody here charges for it.

The crack has been watered down since EQ though. In EQ, the crack lasted 3 hours +, the crack in FFXI only lasts 3 minutes. Damn.

Refresh lasting 3 hours.... {Yes, please.}
Maybe then RDMs would be able to actually melee in parties past 41. ;) I haven't hit something with a sword since the CN. It takes me an hour to kill Mad Sheep in West Ronfaure.

Why would a rdm need to melee in a party anyway ? it gives the mobs more TP for how much dmg ? ...

I never understood. Please enlighten me.

/NIN
Dual Wield
Haste
En-spell

Oh and stoneskin/phalanx/blink, wtf do I care if the mob builds TP.

We're still talking about a party setup, right ?
If you not care about TP because of utsu/phalanx/stoneskin... are you actually tanking ?
If not, maybe the reason you'd care is the actual tank's (all others, if mob AoEs >.>) HP and your main healer's mp...?

sure why not a pt...

I can still refresh and debuff a mob. The buffs are for any AoE attacks.

If a rdm/nin can solo effectively, (I incidentally solo DC+ as a rdm/blm) why would they suddenly become ineffective in a party set-up?

As long as the rdm isn't shirking his duties to the party there is really no reason that they cannot melee. As for giving the mob TP, that's a lame excuse, with at least 3 melees smacking away (with a good whm and rdm, they would all be hasted), the mob is gonna build TP quickly anyways.

On a side note.... Beestinger and hornetneedle on a hasted/en-spelled rdm/nin is something to behold.

almost 33% more TP from melee hits is still pretty big IMO.

If you can deal significant enough damage while still doing your job, I guess I don't see a problem, as long as you know what you're doing.

My negative views towards meleeing RDM come more from those who systematically melee, while doing dmg so ridiculously low they might as well try to nuke a crab to death with water 1.
I personally prefer to go mage style when I play RDM, my spoon don't do much dmg XD

Well, the TP thing has been disproved, as far as I know.

As for meleeing, I don't. And I don't need to; I'm not under the illusion that I'm going to help kill the thing any faster. It's just fun. ;)
Or at least it was, up until my sword started doing >30 damage, and my casting became nonstop, and my mage duties took precedence over my so-so hit power.

I had a Japanese party insist that I melee in Gustav Tunnel. I didn't do HORRIBLY, I critted for 50 while using pie and wearing gear any melee would be humiliated to show up in...but 99% of the time, it was just one more damn thing to do. ^^
Red mage is much too busy a job to melee. Those precious seconds used to cast an enspell, take out a sword and engage the mob are better spent casting Refresh, debuffing the mob, buffing a party member or catching MP.
On that one occasion that I meleed in the party, I very rarely even had time to allow my sword to swing. I probably hit the stupid crab about twice per fight. :P

The battle rages on in the red mage forums. When I left the game, things were more in the 'melee if you want to' area, but now they're back over in 'melee and you're some kind of gimp'.
I don't have any problem with RDMs who DO melee, as long as they're good at it and have their stuff together.
I personally find it too much distraction for too little return, but I do miss the days when I could still do it effectively.
