So I have a slight problem...
I'm getting very bored with FFXI. I just quit school and am working full time now. I don't have nearly as much time as I did when I was in college, and I'm very tired when I'm not working (never be a waiter!!!). Anyways, I'm only lvl 35 blm in this game, rank 5, and HAVE BEEN PLAYING SINCE RELEASE!!! It's not that I'm particularly bad at the game, I just always tried to do lots of random things in teh game that racked up a lot of time (I'm at almost 50 days now).
In game, I haven't played more the an hour a week in almost 2 months, mostly cuz of this job thing. I don't really know a lot of people in game anymore; most people I used to pt with are in their 70's now, or have quit. My friends in RL have quit or moved onto other games (WoW or Guild Wars BETA), and are bugging me to join them. And I know that FFXI is going to take a lot of time to finish (if you can finish an MMO :p). The problem is, the task of lvling up is starting to feel a bit daunting, the in-game economy is going to ****, and the people that I'm running into at my lvl for the few hours I've been playing lately have all been ***** (not naming any names here-no flame wars!). Not only that, but I hear the higher levels are a bit rough with all the HNM guilds being exclusive, having to find a static party (something I probably can't commit time to), and the thought of earning more and more gil to pay for crap just doesn't sound too appealing to me. My thoughts have been looking towards quitting.
I've always wanted to be able to say that I've beaten every FF game, and I'm making headway on the others quite nicely...but it would be a pity to have a mark on my record like not trying to finish XI. Plus I have a lot of time invested in this, and it seems to me that it would suck to have to start all over again at 0 in another game. So I am turning to my fellow community members here on the Bismarck board for advice. Should I keep playing, or let sleeping dogs lie. Is it still worth it to keep going? What reasons are there to pick up my wand and have at it again?
PLEASE...I don't want to quit, but I can't seem to find any good reasons to stay anymore. help me.

Only one who can make this decision is yourself. There is only one question you need to answer yourself to make the decision is: Are you still have fun, enjoying or happy with the game?
Don't look at this when you make your decision, it has nothing to do with it. The game will end one day no matter how much time you played and how good you get into. Reality is the only thing will stick with you lifetime.
What does beating a game give you? Sactisfaction. MMO seems can't be beat and it keeps go on and on with other things to do that you have to figure them out yourself each time. If you consider that you have gotten your sactisfaction from FFXI then you have beat the game.
There are many people out there in FFXI have simular problem you have, you can go find someone that also doesn't care how fast they can get into lv 75 and form a small set PT base on 2 or 3 members.
Nobody is pointing a gun at you to join a HNM LS.
My advice to you is make some new friends in the game. I often find it fun to play with couple friends in game just to do some random things, don't compare yourself with the "people that use to PT with you is lvl 70+" The game isn't about comparing who is stronger than who. It's a place people come together and have fun in a virtual world. I would rather be a person who have fun in FFXI than one that pissed, angry at others and dramas everyday. But this advice is only apply if you have decided to stay. If unfortunaly you decide to leave, I will just wish you good luck. ^^
Another thing. The story of FFXI is not bad and it was fun for me to do missions and just to find out what happen next. So i just wanna remind you there are alot things you haven't done yet. ^^

Llew, I am in a similar situation you happen to be in - I work
6-days a week myself, and can barely grudge up at least, a single 3-4 hour session to play a month... which unfortunately you need in order to get anything done in this game.
I would've continued to level and play despite my lack of hours (because this is a great game), but genkai 1 has more or less sealed my fate. When I dedicate 3-4 hours of my limited time to shout for help in Jeuno, eventually get the help, but nothing drops after 20+ kills... well, I consider it time wasted.
I felt particularly bad for the stranger who also spent 3 of his own hours helping me and with no exoray mold to show for it - that was more or less the final straw for me. I'm in the process of taking a break from FFXI right now.
I'm ranting a bit, but I'm very frustrated at the moment - I really do like FFXI, but it's too time-consuming.
Anyway, I'd suggest you cancel your content id(s) and take a temporary break and see how things go... maybe events will occur in real life where more time becomes available - so you can log on and actually complete stuff.
Or who knows what might happen? But if you cancel your content ids, the obligatory feelings you may have towards FFXI will sever, and you might think more objectively about everything.
In any case, good luck in whatever you decide.

From this, I gather that you are an FF player before being an MMO player.
Well. This point should not influence your decision as (as you were suspecting)you do not finish an MMO. Very few people have, and those people play constantly. And when you "finish" an MMO, you haven't really finished it; you are just stuck against a "bug zapper", some unbeatable NM that is there JUST to occupy people until new content is released (so it is just a temporary "end").

I would say that levels do not matter in the slightest, that it is the fun you're having that counts. If you're not having any fun, well...

Less risks of getting bored if you are with real friends.
If you have little time to play, well, I dunno about guild wars, but WoW sounds like a good option, with the bonus xp on rest states and the ability to solo as much as you want.

Hmmm well 50 days is about where Im at. I wouldnt wanna quit either. but if your bored witht he game and you hardly play as is maybe it is time you move on.
Now if you goto WoW I hear you can make lv 60 in less then a month. So short amount of time = high lv.
