Tse...Can we have the forums in your journal again?Follow

#1 Apr 25 2005 at 7:43 AM Rating: Good
For those of you who remember, we used to have the Bismarck Server Forum in TseTsuo's journal before they created the server forums.

Skimming over the topics in this forum it makes me sad. Back when we were in Tse's journal, there wasn't any of this BS or childish crap. I suppose a lot of this is only natural as the popularity of Allakhazam grows, but think of this:

If you were a new player coming to these boards for the first time, what would your impression of Bismarck be after reading the topics here?

Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of quality threads still out there but the bad always outweighs the good. As good as they are, Kitaru's adventures or threads of thanks fall off the main page way too fast.

I propose we stop feeding the trolls and idiots and see if we can get those kinds of threads to drop off the first page the quickest. Nuke 'em into oblivion and we all turn our default filters on so we don't even see their garbage.

We have a great community here, let's show it. I've decided to continue to maintain my sticky (Sorry Fianchetto, you'll be first in my mind if I decide to drop it again) and let's see if we can return to the helpful, close-knit community we once were.

Just a thought, share your comments or rants. This is just how I feel and I'm definately open to other ideas/comments.

Hear! Hear!

I may not have been around during Tse's journal days but when I joined up here you could see that Bismarck was the best. Sadly the majority of the people that made it that way have stopped posting here because of the trolls and immature asshats that pervade these forums now.

I see posts for help, suggestions, game news and thanks get karma bombed. What the fuck is the matter with you people? Those are the types of threads this forum used to be all about. They are the reason I started reading these forums and eventually the reason I started posting here.

If you need to feed your e-wang go to Yahoo chat or something. Leave the forums for the people that still make Bismarck the best server going.

I have no problem with it, anyone who wants a troll free place to post about bismarck/FFXI related stuff can feel free to post in my journal.

I read this thread, and mulled over it while I was in my first class of the day.

Way back when we had the forums in Tse's journal, there were only a few people that posted there (or was even aware that it existed). I myself happened to find my way there a couple months before the offical server forums were started, because I was bored enough one day to read through several old pages of the main FFXI forum, and stumble across the "offical unoffical server forum list".

Of the people here, the ones from that time that come to mind are Tse, Ele, Lunaria, Fi, Byaina, serimhunter, myself. If I forgot anyone, I am sorry. It HAS been a while after all.

While it was true we had only a little drama (the DWP incident comes to mind), we never really had anyone come in and join except for the random oddball.

The forum there was created out of necessity. We needed a place for us Bizzy people to talk, and so we had it.

Then, when Alla in all of his wisdom (and more than one request from FFXI players) came up with the offical server forums, a lot more people came in. Garan, Merodi, Wintaru, Nata, Chops, and many more. A lot of them high quality people, and I challenge you to prove to me how any of them are a curse on the Bismarckian community.

The forum did change from being a close-knit family, into something more extended. We got fresh blood in, and the feel of the forum changed.

But because the forum was in sight of everyone, we got our share of idiots also. Can anyone name of them? Anyone at all?

I don't think so.

Why?

Because they fade away with the time. They either get rated below the filter (and thus out of existance), or people stop feeding them lines and paying them attention.

Currently, we are in a third wave of new people coming in, including Qinnydar, Chidalia, and a few others. Just like before, we have our idiots (I can think of a couple instantly), but just like before, the idiots will fade away, leaving the best behind.

The taste of the forum is changing once more, but into what, I have yet to know.

I have made friends from back when the forum was in Tse's journal, from the second wave at the beginning of the offical forum, and even now during the third wave.

But how can WE control the idiots and spam on the forums?

Easy.

Don't like a thread? Rate it down. Or don't reply to it, and thus let it fall off the page faster.

With rating down a post, if it drops below 1.50, it goes below the filter, and thus is unseeable by anyone that has default filter settings turned on. A person's individual karma is the average of his or her post's karma. So if the posts are all below filter, that person is then below filter.

In extreme cases, like the original Bad Player's Tread, or the Stolen Kraken Club thread, the thread can be locked by an admin/nuked out of oblivion by an admin.

You want a better forum?

Start rating.

And to quote Illia: "Don't fu[br] [/br]cking feed the trolls."

You feed them, and they will stay around.

I agree Nights, and I think that was what I was trying to say.

I was there during Tse's journal, just not the post ***** that I am now :D

We've lost many of our original great posters due to the idiocy running rampant here, let's start cleaning our boards up and taking them back.

I know that flaming the idiots who post is fun, and it's like a car wreck, you can't help but look. But resist the urge to hit that reply button, rate it down instead and watch them fall to the bottom.

I guess my initial post should be considered more of a rant. I just had to get that off my chest, right now the Asylum is looking more interesting for me to post in.

nights i agree, but the problem is so many posts are rated down that anyone using the filters might miss good posts simply because the person posting it is being camped.

I am by no means saying stop using this and post in my journal, i am simply providing a place for people to talk without fear of getting karma camped/flamed etc.

just look at wintaru's karma on this one, for a fine example.

I agree completely. I think I've posted maybe 4-5 times in the last two months, basically due to there not being many interesting threads started. Mostly people bitching about stupid stuff. It's sad too, since I used to post on average 2-3 times a day during the days of Tset's journal and when the 'official forums' first started.

I used to love coming here and just reading all of the interesting things people had to say, making friends with many of em and having an all-around great time.

Maybe we liked Tset's journal so much cuz it was a new, exciting thing at the time? Where we could meet and talk with people from Bismarck exclusively, outside of the game.

Eh, I dunno but I do miss the forums being there for whatever reason.

Oh and /welcome Chid ^^ It's about time ya got on here.

Personally I'd rather have a controlled environment than one that is controlled only by karma scores and the rare intervention of an admin. Karma can only do so much, we all could rate down a topic, but this person just has to call in a friend and rate it back up, or create a sock puppet account, get high enough karma, and he can control his own ratings. And there's no doubt in my mind that people do this, especially since the most pathetic topics here just got rated up, many times, and people who posted helpful topics got rated down, many times.

Karma is like communism, works great on paper. But add in the unpredictible factor called Humans and we have ourselves chaos. And as FF1 taught us, Chaos ain't very nice. :p

Now I shall step off my soapbox before it freaking breaks in half for me standing on it so many times.

Posted on Tse's journal :)
Link in first post.

I would like to say as a member of the 2 and a 1/2 wave, that there have been changes in the feel of the forum. But still look at who is still here. Practically everyone who posted here during the summertime when I first started visiting the site are still here.

The might of many outweighs the might of one. Bismarck will prevail through thick and thin not matter what. Yes we will have our share of hardships, but the thing to remember is don't forget your friends.

This is the link into my thread in Tse's journal:

hmmm my other post didnt take, wierd.

Anyway even though i am 99% sure that i had the option for auto renew set to yes my premium did not auto renew and at this time i dont plan to. This means my journal is no more.

So if someone else wants to pick up the "Troll free bismarck" idea best of luck!

Side note anyone who wants to is free to register on our linkshell website as we have open area's to post for the public.

I can just about guarantee there is no trolling, except there is a creepy cat that floats around.
