What the...is it possible, this soon???Follow

#1 Mar 01 2005 at 12:54 PM Rating: Good
A friend on Yahoo! messenger stumbled across this, and fowarded it to me just a few minutes ago.

Before, it has been said that when SE shuts down the FFXI servers, private servers will pop up, much like it has with various other MMOs...

But now, so soon?

I submit for your critiques and opinions. Do anyone actually think this will survive, and not get slapped with a lawsuit?

I think this is a pipe dream for him :)

I know nothing about computers but I have a feeling it'll take a little more than this to run FFXI from a server other that SE's.

Look at all the updating and events SE is doing, these aren't the actions of a company that is getting ready to drop the game :)

my guess is there is something like the following setup:

1x server (main lobby,POL,etc)
1x server per city (if not 1 server per city per zone in the city)

possibly 1x server per zone, if not several zones per server with notoriously popular zones like dunes/qufim/jungles/GC/etc having their own.

i think this partially because SE can selectively shut down a zone and also because think about a normal FPS and trying to run a server. 32-64 people is basically the max for a normal PC and even that is pretty taxing on it.

the other question becomes how in the hell did he get the source and/or the server executables and if he did lets get some algortithms for damage and drop rates :)

it seems rather unlikely.

Possible, yes.
Likely, no.
Expensive as all hell, yes.
Within this persons capabilities, not likely.

TseTsuo, that's the first thing I thought about when I clicked on that link. This has scam written all over it. So, as they say, {Thanks for the offer, but I'll have to pass.}

They did this with EQ it's called EQEmu or something like that. It's a novelty, there's noway someone can totally emulate an SE FFXI server. But, ask yourself, wouldn't it be fun if like, just Jeuno were up and you could PVP in Jeuno with everyone that was logged on? That was the kind of things that got done with the free EQ servers. Not meant to remake the game (in the end when they figure out just how much programming/manpower/$$$ it would take), just to have some fun.

My question is, since it's based on "Give me your current character name and level" that it would be filled with all level 75s.

What keeps me from telling them: "My name is Hyla, I'm a 75 rng/nin...all my other jobs are 60."

FF is fun because there are thousands of people on at once. If I were on a server with 100 people and no set economy...I would have nothing to aspire to.

There have been a couple of Final Fantasy Emulation projects in the works for some time now.

I am fairly certain that none of them are complete as of yet. I dont know who the guy is who made the web page described in the first post is, but if he possessed 1% of the skills neccessary to bring up a full blown FFXI environ, then he would have no problem maing a webpage that doesnt look like ***. Its not even implemented in such a way as to be an effective scam. It just looks stupid (but I may be wrong)

To create a successful FFXI emu you also have to recreate Play Online and several other factors. As to wether it can all be run on one server? I believe that the number of servers involved in any FFXI emulation project would be based directly on the number of simultaneous players. And I think you could run a 50 user community on one server with out any issues.

There is a fairly large and well orgaized froup of people trying to create a working FFXI (non SE) environment. Try Googleing: "ProjectXI" that should get you pointed in the right direction.

But in response to some of the posters here who think it is an impossibility to recreate the envirnment that SQueenix has made, I offer my own opinion that I feel you are ultimately incorrect. It can, and is being done. But its not going to ruin your experience on the official servers. Rogue servers exsist for all MMOGs (just saw one for WoW today..that was quick ;;), but its nothing to get your panties in a wad about.

Have a nice day!

(please exscuse any poor grammar or spelling)
