Okay, on the RDM forum, someone mentioned how subs raise magic caps. New concept for me >.< Never seen it before or noticed, my question is this: If subbing a mage job raises magic skill caps, does subbing a melee job raise weapon skill caps? Yes, even at level 56 I still have things to learn

Uh, well this is news to me. How could a sub raise caps? I can understand adding non-existant stats (like BLM/RDM for sword skill), but raising it when it's half the level of your main?

If they're speaking of Divine, however, they should probably note that RDMs already *have* an inherent Divine stat, it's not coming from a sub. If not then I don't know.

I'll just stop there. If I'm wrong I don't wanna make *too* big of an *** out of myself... >_>

Your sub definately alters the caps of your magic skills. I noticed this when I was leveling RDM, since all my skills were capped from BLM and WHM already being so much higher.

We all know the main 6 skills is:

1. Divine 2. Healing

3. Enhancing 4. Enfeebling (not positive if this order is correct)

5. Elemental 6. Dark

With BLM subbed, 4 5 and 6 were slightly higher, and like-wise with WHM subbed 1 2 and 3 were slightly higher. 3 and 4 were always a few notches higher than the rest though.

Example:

1: 46 2: 46
3: 52 4: 48
5: 40 6: 40
(actual numbers are completely made up, but this would be for a whm sub)

Since I've been a mage most of my career, I honestly can't speak for Weapon Skills, but I do believe that subbing MNK to THF raised my H2H cap by a point or 2.

Actually, this isn't true, as far as I know. Raise gives skillups in healing magic, not divine. At level 58, I have a big goose egg in divine magic.

Subjobs do affect the caps on skills, but I don't know if they raise the cap. RDMs, for instance, have no natural ability with staffs, despite the fact they can equip some. Right now, my staff skill with RDM main is 15 (well, how often does a BLM melee?) and uncapped. Factoring in magic skills, it seems the cap may be lower if the skill is exclusive to your sub than it would be if you made that sub into your main (I can't conclusively prove this right now, but I'm fairly sure I've seen ninjutsu capped on my RDM at a point it was not capped on my NIN).

I ran a few more tests with BLM main. As BLM/RDM, my magic (except divine, of course) was all capped. As long as the skill was a shared trait between subjob and main job or a trait held only by a main job, these skills did not move. Enfeebling, for instance, held steady at 86 no matter what subjob I used.

The only time the skills changed were when they were subjob specific. For example, my healing is 44 with BLM 30/RDM 16, but capped at 6 as BLM 30/WHM 1.

So, in conclusion...I'd say that the original premise that a subjob can raise the cap of magic skills is incorrect, meaning I seriously doubt it would raise the cap of weapon skills.

RDM have a divine magic skill. They just don't have any divine magic. They can level it, as long as they have white mage subbed to access the proper spells.

That being said, you cannot level skills your sub has, ie you can't level scyth if you have black mage subbed, or ninjutsu/katanas with ninja subbed. You HAVE the skill in your roster - you just can't do anything with it.

Sorry, Alauce, I was doing a pretty major edit while you were posting this. I probably wasn't the best person to answer that particular question originally, since I don't level WHM. You're right, though (I should have realized this just by the fact that I have a 0 in it). I had assumed that divine magic was like the staff or ninjutsu examples listed in my edited post.

Suppose I should be more specific. Lets say you're a RDM/PLD (this is a hypothetical, even I would not try it,) would the PLD sub cause your sword skill to have a higher cap per level?

Judging from from my experiments with magic cap, I'm still going to go with no.

Just to be sure, I switched main to 15 WAR. Regardless of what I subbed, my sword skill was capped at 45. So it's a definite no.
