wee suspended for a lame reason!Follow

#1 Feb 03 2005 at 3:10 PM Rating: Default
Hello everyone. I'm Rasdafunk, of you might have seen me. Well I'm going to tell my SOB story cuz I am sad.

Alright so it's 3am, and there is only two people in my LS on. So I log off make a new charcters, and name it after her. We were like "wee we're gil sellers"... So I got this great idea. I deleted that charcter and made one called Tomhh...

So as Tomhh I go /annon, hide info, all that jazz. I run around bastok saying "I'm a gil seller come buy my gil!!".

This was at 3am, NO ONE IS EVERN PLAYING!

8, yes 8 hours later I switcha accounts back to Rasdafunk. I mean only like 10 mins of the 8 hours I was on Tomhh was saying "buy my gil" (as a complete joke... sheesh) so I'm Rasdafunk. I walk from Bastok to Jeuno, and when I get to Jeuno I enter "Mordia Gaul" aka HELL. I'm like "all great they're getting me for Tomhh?" Turns out I'm suspended for 3 days! and if I log on My accounte gets deleted. I was like "whoa three days for a joke that no one took serious?" and if I get in trouple once more there goes my account. I was like "wtf thats a little harsh for 10 mins of fun that no one even cared about."

The funny thing was I really got like 20 /tell's asking where they can buy my gil.

But not one complaint.

I'm fine with sitting the three days out, but I REALLY don't think it should count agiast if I some how get in trouble again.

P.S I'm sad /cry I have 2 months off, I just 50, have one more item left for G1, so I'm way into right now.

but yeah please post your comments I'm intrested in what people have to say about it.

Thanks you,
Andrew/Rasdafunk/teh proest gil farmer that farms bats... Tomhh

I'm surprised. This is usually how they request you catch the real gil sellers.

But you used the name Tom, so shouting that was not a good idea since I'm sure they've been watching that group for a very long time and just waiting for one of them do what you just did and then *BAM,* there's the confession they've been waiting for.

Even if you didn't pick a Tom they probably still would've nailed you because they're getting all sorts of grief from the players about how they don't do anything about this issue. I'm sure they're edgy.

In a sense, it's good that you were jailed, because that means they're actually doing something about the issue. Though at the same time proving they're not really doing more than sitting by their computers waiting for someone to shout "I sell gil!"

I really thought a warning would be ok, I mean not like I really did anything wrong. I'm not a gil seller...

I completly understand about them doing something about it, and I respect that but a 3 day suspenstion I think was too harsh for the situration I was in...

sorry but you totally deserve it. Do you notice how hard it is to get a gilseller booted? So hard that it rarely happens and do you know why? because it is hard to prove, tracking an RMT would require the support of the offending site, or some form of admission on the sellers part in game... which is exactly what you did.

You made a character, designed to look like a Tom**, made extra efforts to look like a gil seller, then went around shouting it. You got exactly what you deserved.

yep probably trying to get you to admit more details, i'll bet most of those people called a GM first. So next time a real gil seller gets caught they can say "oh i was just joking" and get off right?

that no one even cared about.

GM reports aren't self generated. Obviously someone cared.

I'll bet all the people trying to get Kote or archers thank you now for making it a little harder to track down the real problem players and get them removed.

That was a very stupid thing for you to do. You just made it that much harder to convict anyone with the name tom

Let's be honest about this for a minute. No, it wasn't a very intelligent thing to do, but it doesn't affect what happens to gilsellers at all.

Saying the way to solve the gilseller problem is to ban their players is a bit like saying the way to fix a hole in a bottom of a boat is to keep dumping the water over the side. If the toms get banned, then we get Bobs. If the Jerrys go, we get Ralphs. You get the point.

A lot of people are confusing gilsellers with gilfarmers. Why is it so hard to get proof that the Toms are selling gil? Because they're not. They're farming it. Somewhere, there is a website selling the gil, and it's not very hard to prove they're selling it, because it's right there on the order page. So the difficulty of proving who is selling gil isn't the issue - it's obvious by looking at the website who is selling gil.

I'm not saying the GMs aren't doing their best, don't get me wrong. But if SE is serious about stopping the sell of gil, they're fighting the war on the wrong front, and I'm assuming they have people smart enough to realize that. The way to stop this would be to actually take the companies selling gil to court.

But like I said on another thread...that's a pain, and costs money, and we'll all keep playing regardless...so why bother?

I think I either read on the main forum or elsewhere that if you even joke about selling gil, they're still going to bust your ***, because how do they know if you're joking or not?

Them's the breaks.

well I could tell it was a joke, haha, but thats not saying much sense I was the joker lol...

My macro was like

/sh weeee I'm a Tom!
wait
/sh who wants gil?! come to <pos>
wait
/sh I have a ton of it!

the really funny thing is 70% of the people who came and asked were in fill AF gear, one had optical hat on.

then if the GM's didn't just read what they wanted to they would have saw the /tell's with my friend's laughing about everyone trying to buy my gil, and how I can't wait to get my ls... but hey what ever.

and if anyone told me they cared, I would have stopped. I wasn't there to push any buttons. this just shows that people really do take this game too serious and really need to chill out. just about everyone in this game gets into fight they know nothing about. like who ever reported had no idea what was going on. he didn't ask me or anything, he just assumed that my sillyness, was ummm real, and so he decided to call a GM.

I still really want to know what took them 8 hours, and do it on a different account. I don't understand that part.

if they were going to do something about the tom's they would have done it. and I'm safe to sat every tim but tomhh is an actual tom. aka the 7th one, the one that doesn't fit in the party... the level 5 thf... GM's are smart enough to know that.

Okay, HOLD UP! I've actually thought of having some fun myself that way but...

WTH? I get the Jerrys to admit to being gil sellers, and they only get suspended for 1-2 months?

You however, for a joke, get suspended two days--if you do anything again, DELETED? COME ON!
#17 Feb 12 2005 at 10:35 PM Rating: Decent
oh right! I did take screenshots of jail.

The first day I was sent I was maxed out on screenshots the day I was able to play again I deleted 2 really fast. I'm off to a concery right now so I'll send them to myself and post them

/em points his finger and laughs like Nelson.

Good story. Three days isn't a lot if you really think about it, and the people at SE were just doing their job. It's stories like this that bring me to this website. Thanks for the chuckle.

This may be a bit off topic but seriously, think about this before you do anything again like this.

Quote:
It is a commonly held misconception, due to the informal traditions of electronic communication, that e-mails carry less weight than letters on headed notepaper. But this is not the case. The law treats emails as ‘discoverable documents’ in exactly the same way as all other forms of written communication, and as such, just as much care and attention should be taken regarding the content of emails as with other forms of business communication.

http://www.net-security.org/article.php?id=767

Yes this is talking about email but the same kind of thing applies to Internet chat and as far as I know, games. I do not know of any case offhand where someone got in trouble for saying anything in a game, but if servers keep any kind of logs of what is said in a game, that information is permitted as evidence in a court of law. I know a handful of people who have been arrested for conspiring to attack certain IRC networks, and there is the ever famous Mafiaboy who was arrested and part of the evidence against him was collected IRC chat logs. If you created a character named b.inladen or something and shouted about how proud you are of your work in FFXI, I honestly would not be a bit surprised if the FBI showed up at your door in a few days. (FFXI does not encrypt any packets so they are subject to the internet monitoring tools)

So a bit back on subject, as far as SE is concerned, joking or not they could have banned you from the server as soon as you said, "I'm a gil seller come buy my gil!!” Too many people think that the Internet is a complete free for all and that anything goes. You are liable for your actions. It’s a bit harder to detect sarcasm when you are reading something on a chat log. Joking is fine and great when you are among friends who cannot take your message out of context, but seriously, think about what your doing.

Sorry small rant came out of this, and I am typing this 5 min before quitting time so if there are a bunch of spelling\grammatical errors (Please forgive me.)
