Ray I am talking to you!! Check this out.

http://www.star-rise.com/ffxi/

That's what my screen starts to look like after 15 minutes of standing in the same area for too long. Nothing has fixed it. NOTHING. This is what I'm look at when I'm trying to exp. It makes me sad. :( I'm particularly fond of the oil slick look by the waterfall in Boyahda...

So... is this happening to anyone else? Preferably anyone else with an idea of what I should do about it?

Kool! It's Disco mode! :D :D Nah but yeah, that happened to my friend, and then me, you gotta fully un-install FFXI and re-install, you WILL lose all your macros tho ; ; So it'd be a good idea to write down the important ones. But yes, A full re-install will fix this right up^^;

Thanks for teh info^^ Rate up :P I wish I knew that when i had to re install ; ; ; ;

This doesn't actually look to me like reinstallation is necessary >.>

These are graphics artifacts, it looks like; it looks like a problem with your video drivers, and possibly with your video card.
If you have the time some day, you might try reinstalling your video driver; you can download drivers from the manufacturer's website on the net.
If that doesn't help the problem, it may be a good idea to look into a new card, especially if this one is old.

Just my 2 pennies. ;)

i've seen this happen to a friend's computer. i suggested he uninstall and reinstall FFXI, and it didn't work. i then suggested he get updated video drivers, and that he uninstall the old ones. that didn't work either. we then looked into his video card. his video card was a nvidia geforce 2 mx. i'm surprised he manages to play on the card, and i'm surprised that it would cause this problem. so, i suggested he change the video card, get updated drivers and tell me if it anything changes. about a week after i suggested it, he saved enough money to get a geforce 5700 and has had no more graphical problems.

this used to happen to a friend of mine who recently quit the game. only it would happen much much worse..... we called them his "vissions" he posted a few pics that he took when it happened, i'll try to see if they still exist.

Those are almost definately Video Card issues.

Try getting the latest drivers for you card and if that doesn't work, you should check the temp of your video card it might be overheating. If the card is old, the fan may have died, if it's new, the heatsink might be full of dust.

Do you overcLock your videocard?
Does the game ever freeze for a few minutes?
Does it ever crash?
Have you checked your event logs for anything else that might be goin on?

Without knowing the kind of videocard, and exactly what you do with it, it's kinda tough to troubleshoot any further than that.

Thanks for all of your suggestions. The only problem is, I've tried all of them already. I've screwed with my DirectX settings, I'm currently running an OLDER driver instead of the latest one because the latest one wreaked havoc with my computer, I've used every possible graphical setting for FFXI, I reformatted and reinstalled my ENTIRE COMPUTER, etc etc etc. At this point I'm at a loss. The card is a GeForce Ti4200 with 128MB of VRAM on it, so it's not exactly a piece of ****. And I forgot to mention, NONE of these problems cropped up until after the most recent FFXI update.

Wasn't there something a while back about certain driver releases being garunteed to work? Might want to try those out to see if there is any difference.

Have you checked (if you are able) the temp of your card, as was mentioned above? This honestly looks like signal corruption due to overheating to me.

Barring that, what version of the GeForce Drivers did you last try? The current version is 6.6.9.3, and seems to work fine on my computer.

You might want to try them again.

Before you do though I would recommend this: Go to http://www.drivercleaner.net and download Driver Cleaner. In my experience Video Card drivers are bad for not updating properly. It's often useful to remove all vestiges of the old drivers before installing new ones.

Be sure that you follow the instructions in the readme file that comes with the program explicitly, if you choose to try it.

Here are those instructions:

Quote:
1. Unplug nic card or modem from net or disconnect
2. Remove nvidia from add/remove programs
3. Reboot into safe mode (F8 during boot up)
4. On reboot into safe mode WinXP SP1/SP2 will auto detect and install drivers. Just let it do its thing. If you can cancel out of the auto install hardware wizard then skip to Step 7. If you can NOT cancel out of auto detect wizard then...
5. Navigate to device mgr->display adapters->highlight nVidia and click uninstall or remove but don't reboot
6. Disable any AntiVirus Software (If you don't disable is than it could give trouble)

7. Run Cab Cleaner (not needed, but recommended)
8. Run Driver Cleaner
9. Empty recycle bin and reboot
10. Install the new drivers

Incidently, you switch between CAB Ceaner and Driver Ceaner by clicking on the appropriate option under the Tools menu.

In CAB Ceaner to be thorough you should probably run it on Driver.cab, SP1.cab, and SP2.cab (from the pulldown list).

in Driver Cleaner you would simply need to select nVidia from the list of card models.

That may not solve your problem, but it should remove the problem you had with updated GeForce drivers.

I must say, my friend had this same problem, we changed 2 things and it was fixed....

removed a usb hub (it was fun destroying that pos)
changed out the video card (factory oc'd and ubercooled ati 9600 pro to a nvidia 6800 gt)

you tell me what fixed it

I'm guessing the video card. That still completely pisses me off, though. The card was brand new and relatively top of the line a year ago when I built my computer, and I had NO problems with it until the last mega-update. And at the moment, I don't have $300 sitting around for a new ubercard.

Angry.

I had this exact same problem with my Radeon 9100 Pro a few months back. Now, it's nowhere near an expensive video card. Not top of the line. So I wasn't expecting much. Went out, bought a Radeon 9600 (128 bucks max), and the problem was solved. Some video cards just.. don't like FFXI, and there's no real explanation for it.

Bleh... you're probably right. That still makes me sad. -_- Ok, so... who has a suggestion for a card that will be better than what I have but not some ridiculous price?

My girlfriend had the exact same problem and if it wasnt the background that was messing up it was the characters - there was a time when everyone on her comp appeared invisible except for their armour.

It seems that FFXI is a pretty tempremental game to play and the only way we got around fixing this problem was to buy a new graphics card.

Wow and i thought my FFXI was screwed up (o_O) I'm running FFXI on my bf's laptop but apparently the game doesnt recognize the videocard he has, so we had to get some 3DAnalyze program in order to even run the game. It's always irritated me cuz the entranceways to towns and caves are always flickery with black and white triangles. It must be some issue with shadows or something, cuz I cant see Avatars during certain weather effects. I can put up with it (i still dont really know what Garuda looks like) but i feel bad for ya and hope you can get it fixed soon. Glitches like that would drive me nuts.

On the PC version I believe you can turn off weather effects, which should help you out at least with some of your problems.

Should be in your menu under Config.
