Ok, this might have been able to go into the Main forum but I just think that the Bismarck people seem to do a better job of responding quickly, and intelligently to posts.
I wanted to know a couple things about Spook in Ranparre's (sp) Tomb.
1.Is he actually counted as a Notorious Monster? I don't believe he is. But I could be wrong, I usually am.
2.Because I don't have TH is the drop percentage only 2% for the Traveler's mantle? Some arrogant little twit elvaan thf came in to tell me that I shouldn't even bother because I didn't have TH and that Spook IS a NM.
I just wanted to know if I should keep camping him for some better gear, or just give up because of the crap % rate.
F.Y.I. The Elvaan Thief (shall not be named because he may have just been acting up in this one incident) said he found Spook under the Notorious Monsters list here on Alla, which I didn't want to go check.
Haven't gotten the Traveler's mantle after my 10 camps and about 4 claims. (Hey its not bad considering there are like 7 other people there). I camp it as a DRK/WAR (25/12).

I'd never suggest anyone give up. Persistance ALWAYS pays off, even if it has to skate the edge of utter stubbornness. Always.
That said, TH will help you a lot on the drop. I have an LS mate that camps Spook incessantly (Hitokiribatousi, you've prolly seen him there), and does it as a thief around lvl 18. He gets enough drops that he sells two a day sometimes.
I sure understand not wanting to lvl THF, but for a fast drop that would be my suggestion, if an LS mate of friend could PL you it will go a lot faster.
Treasure Hunter isn't a REQUIREMENT for the drop though, and if you stick with it you'll get it in time. ;)
edit: I don't think Spook is technically an NM. Someone mentioned over the LS that he was checking EP to them, so it might be something like the Stroper Chyme.

The Spook is an NM, if you have beaten him before he will con to you (at least thats what SE said they were updating awhile back)
It REALLY helps to have TH2, but TH will work... I have never gotten a NM drop without it, but Sioux is right (as always ^^) it is not required

Ok, my thief is only level 16, I figure leveling it to 20 or so would be enough to kill Spook and live?
Yes, he's very good at claiming him quickly... as is Fez who was there with me during my few days of camping him, I will try again but I guess it is time to level my thief for a few levels.

Unless the update did something, spook is not a NM as far as I am concerned
I meant the update lets you con NMs you've defeated (I believe thats what SE said)
And in peoples opinions the Spook might not be considered an NM, however for the game it is.

As far as giving up... DONT!!
I was a lvl 20 something dragoon and got it on the 2nd fight (War subbed). So when people say give up even IF the drop is 2%, it doesnt mean you will never get it. I have proven many theifs wrong by getting items that "cant be aquired without THF or Thf sub"

There are tons of NMs that don't give you titles. I'm not sure about the specifics of what makes an NM an NM, but for me, unless it cons impossible to gauge, it's not an NM. If SE changed something in the last patch then that changes my outlook on it a bit, but I haven't noticed any difference.
Camped these 2 for my Strike Baghnaks, at this time I wanted to get my THF gear by myself, but I've given up after this one.

I've never killed spook. He checked "too weak to be worthwhile" to me. Not an NM.
Condition for NM = "<t>'s strength is imossible to gauge!"
NM does not equal a popular, overcamped mob.. spook and stroper chyme are such mobs that are overcamped but they are not considered NMs.

I also don't think SE did anything about checking a previously-killed NM. I've checked VE multiple times this last week, and he's always impossible to gauge.. and I've probably killed him more than anyone else (or close to) on the server.

NM doesnt always con as Impossible to Gauge, alot mission relate NMs con EP-VT.
Too bad we can't start a pole on this forum eh? Might be kind of interesting to see what the final vote would be..or just on NM's in general heheh.

"Strength is Impossible to Gauge!" is the only thing we have for a tool of measurement. Otherwise.. you can just say anything is an NM. Who is to say that a ding bat isn't a ronfaure NM?

Err no... there are tons ding bat in ronfaure, they arent special.
IMO NM are single mobs with special name. Some mission relate mobs have special names but they con too weak to me.
The slimes or whatever supposedly drop electrum rings. Does this make them an NM? Many normal mobs drop items too. The spook is on a normal spawn timer as everything else in there.
Ok guys Spook is not an NM. With that said every time I camp it as Thf I get 100-250k in drops. I also claim Spook about 90% of the time i'm there. Well good luck and just be persistent. I never got Spook as I first began.
