This contains a slight hijack. Be warned.
I liked .hack, what I played of it anyway.
But then this game came along and sucked away what free time I have. I'll get back to it eventually.

Two pieces of information. The GBA Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories is
not Kingdom Hearts 2 (which comes out on the PS2 sometime next year) but more of a KH 1.5.
And you shouldn't really need to replay KH to follow along. The story stops directly (and I mean
directly, like 3 seconds later) after Kingdom Hearts. It details Sora (and in an unlockable "second quest" sort of deal, Riku) as he works his way through the mysterious Castle of Oblivion, a place containing the power to add to, distort, and remove memories from those who enter. The Castle is under the control of the secretive Organization (creative name -_- ), who play a major role in KH2.
The game is much a retelling of the plot of the original KH, which should pretty much cover you for anything major you have forgotten, with supplementary events which foreshadow KH2.
And KH2 is making me drool already. I'm not a big one to partake of the relentless hype-machine that the industry churns daily, but it really does look to be stupendous.
Time will tell I suppose.
