So some friends and I were crafting in Bastok tonight and we got to talking. You know the usual gil-sellers, in-game economics, inflation, bad parties, good people, friends.
just the usual chit chat. Then we got into a very interesting
discussion about people monopolizing the AH on certain items.

What it all boiled down to was wether there really was a monopoly on certain items or if the people that were selling them were just better at obtaining these items. Take me for example.

Currently I am working on smithing and in Bastok Iron Ore (which I always am in need of) sells for 600gil each. Last night there were 64 on AH which I bought out, but even that was not enough. So then I started getting tells from people Csb, Csk, Tomdd, Tomcc asking me if I needed Iron Ore.

1. There were none on AH
2. The guild sells it for more than 600gil each.
3. Mining is not something I am a big fan of

So now it seems that I have my own personal suppliers for the items that I need. To me the reason I am purchasing these items from these notorious people are due to the fact that they are just plain better at getting me the ores that I need. While I still go to the AH to purchase this item to give others a chance to make some money too it's far more conveniant to send a tell to someone in the mines already like for example Tomdd asking if he/she has Iron Ore for sell and then they appear ASAP to sell you some.

It's kind of like having my own personal mining crew ^^

So why did I post this here? not for vindication or acceptance.
But curiousity has again gotten the best of me.

If you guys were in a situation where you needed a certain item that is not currently avaulable unless purchased from someone known, would you do it? And would you do it out of conveniance.

I've been offered before, actually. By Careerwoman.

I politely turned her down.

What level is your Smithing at? I might have an alternative...

Smithing currently @ 22

And you know I'll be more than happy to buy any Iron Ore you have. I am usually in need of it anytime I am in bastok.
Coincidently I am only ever in Bastok when I am working on Smithing.

I have a better idea.

I'm currently supplying Wintaru with zinc ore, and possibly silver at a later date.

Why don't we schedule some kind of plan.

You tell me how much iron ore you think you'll need per week, and I'll provide it in whatever manner is most effective and convenient for us both.

@500 ea.

If we can get this rolling, you might find this nice, as it will provide you with a steady supply.

Going to bed now. Lemme know what you think, and I'll see you tomorrow.

Well so far I am counting that I am using about 400+ Iron Ore every other day when I work on it my craft and with the rising status of my Skill that number is jumping massively.

So if you think you could provide me with 1000+ Iron Ore weekly then we got a deal ^^.

At least until I max out crafting with Iron Ore then maybe you'll be high enough to go places to mine me some Darksteel ^^

1000+ a week @500 per

*starts coutning on fingers*

:(

Hmm, I think I should take up this mining thing.. especially if I am going to take up smithing. Are the gains good? Haven't even looked into smithing or goldsmithing yet, just dabled a bit in goldsmithing and getting to 1 was a bit costly compared to other skills.

That's physically impossible.

Here's an alternative for 22-25

Spatha
Fire + Lizard Skin + 3 Bronze Ingots

Around 29 or so I'd recommend you start desynthing Leather Belts bought from a vendor in Northern San d'Oria.

Lightning + Leather Belt
1 Sheep Leather
[HQ1] 1 Iron Ingot
[HQ2] 2 Iron Ingot

Requires a blacksmithing of 0 (!!), but I'd recommend you get your leather up to ten or so. Load up your Mog House with Lightning effect, and desynth on darksday for best results.

In any event, I should be able to provide you with some iron ore this evening. I'll be in touch.

I get a lot of darksteel and iron ores mining, if you need to buy. 500 gil each? ^^
#11 Dec 01 2004 at 4:50 AM Rating: Excellent
PS By the time you need darksteel you should be able to desynth Quadav Helms and Backplates into the ore without too much trouble.

I'd recommend farming them, personally.

lol Var, 1000+ ore a week is damned near impossible, at least in Zeruhn where I mine.

But it's definitely lucrative, especially if you're brave enough to mine Ifrit's Cauldron. Adaman sells for... well... go look at AH... Smiley: tongue

I'd be happy to give you a bit of an introductory tutorial of mining. Just send me a /tell tonight, on Freedomfries.

^^

Exactly why I went to the people who specialize in the mining of these Ores as they are in there non stop mining.

So tonight hmm? You mean tonight right now? Because there is none at AH atm and I don't wanna go fish for mining points >.<

Lol it's 5 AM man, this is "this morning."

By tonight I mean once the sun rises and sets on Wednesday, December 1, 2004.

(December already. Jesus.)

As for "this morning", I am going to bed. See you "tonight".

Smiley: grin

Ifrit's Cauldron? Dam, I can't even get to the 2nd jungle w/o getting lost.

Ummm. didn't you say you were going to bed like 5 posts ago?

Yep, I've finally learned my way through the cauldron and how to get to all the mining points. Granted, I've deleveled from 33>30 twice over the course of six months. ((I took a break to raise it again)) but that's what you get when you're an addict to cauldron mining :p

Ifrit's Cauldron mining is fun as hell. Too bad the only good things that come out of it are helluva rare. I've only ever gotten an orichalcum twice, and never a single adaman. *shakes head*

Zander:
In response to your original question, I see nothing wrong with you buying ore from these people.
You have already expressed that they are willing to do something you are not, so you have suddenly created demand. It sounds like you're buying out the AH anyway, so chances are you would STILL be buying from these people, just not in a direct way.
I understand that people in Gusgen have made life miserable for many others, but not everyone is going to adhere to the unwritten rules of HELM that some of us abide by, it's a fact of life.

what I did from smithing 20 -> 24 was sheets til 22, and scales til 24.
Rather large loss here, but a relatively easy synth.
From 24-34 you can still do padded caps for relatively little loss (even less loss if you fish these up yourself).
#18 Dec 01 2004 at 1:14 PM Rating: Good
I should add that I see nothing wrong with it either.

I won't do it myself because I tend to hold myself to a stricter code than I would ever consider applicable for someone else.

I have been told in this day and age that this is unusual. But nevertheless, just because I won't do something doesn't mean that I think everyone else should do like I do.

Just thought I'd clarify.
