when i click my character to start playing, it stays on the black screen that says "downloading data..." then after waiting for 5 minutes it finally says "no connection to server." i checked the official ffxi site and it said bismarck was up. what should i do to start playing again?!? i've been trying this for 3 days already
I had this same problem, a while back. First and most important question is: Are you using PC, and if so, are you using XP?
Microsoft released a service pack a few months ago (SP2) which, for some reason does pure hell to Final Fantasy connection. If you have automatic updates, it probably went into your system without you even realizing it. All I did to fix my problem was find where it sent my service packs (SP2) and deleted all of them.
No problems since.
(Microsoft has admitted that this problem <not just on FFXI> has been caused by the pack, its on their website)

hmm i'm using PC.. and i have no clue where to find where it sends the files. yes i have automatic updates

i just scanned my ffxi for problems and it found 1 in: C:\Program Files\PlayOnline\SquareEnix\FINAL FANTASY XI\polboot.exe
and it said i should reinstall it, i guess i'll just do try that
