This is a rant that's been in the making for a very long time. I'd really like people's views on the subject as well.
I recently had a conversation with someone, and it ended in this person actually threatening me over FFXI, and not in a joking way. Since then the game just doesn't feel the same, and my friends think as though I've totally changed. I haven't said much, and I feel as though I was somewhat wronged in this situation.
Has this game really gotten that far into the minds of people to where this kind of crap happens?
I'm not posting any names, or anything of that sort. I'd just like some other views on this matter....

IMHO this is just another case of random human ignorance....
I was reading in another server, or maybe a thread on here about a guy who got offended because another person was making jokes about a subject the first guy found very serious... he(the offended guy) felt that the best way to deal with such ignorance is to block it out (that happy /blist command ^,^) he also left the ls he was in cause it was one of the ls members that was being offensive
the only thing I can add to that is...
if your not having fun, change the situation so you are.... if someone is offending you, try to talk it out, if that doesnt work, /blist em (not worth your time talking to if they dont care that you were offended) remember always that people are people, and that the average person doesnt care who they step on/offend/kick in the groin/etc on the way... and lastly, but mostly... dont let the actions of others dictate how much fun you can have... it just gives them power over you that no one should ever have

when people bug me or annoy me i just simply ignore them or /blist them. I have been threatened but then you simply call a GM. Threatening should not be happening in the game. We are all here to have fun. I hope this game does not turn into a Diablo or any other blizzard game those games are really terrible for that. I know i get annoyed at people but i just try to shrug it off. If you get annoyed please try to do the same all you do by getting angry is made is a bad in-game experience for not only you but anybody in else that is effected by it.

Cel it breaks my heart to see you upset over this. Some stated earlier, that in this digital medium that FFXI is built on, threats are truly harmless. But we decide how we let them affect us. Often times, it is something to simply be forgotten though understandably not easily shrugged off. People exist of all types, good and bad, but we decide ultimately what kind of effect they'll have on us. My guess is it'll just take time. Just keep your head held high and ignore anything that could possibly ruin the game for you, whether it be some nub in Qufim yelling at you for not agreeing to his pld/nin idea or something like this.
You're surrounded by friends, remember that, and nothing can take that away from you. And, well, if all that doesn't work, we can always go bash skellies^^

Internet interaction is a lot like highway interaction, and it causes the same sort of 'road rage' reaction sometimes. You just have to see it like this; when you're driving up the road and someone cuts you off or otherwise irritates you, you're not angry with the *person driving the car*, some part of your mind is pis[b][/b]sed at the car itself. It sounds silly, but it's true (at least in my case).
And it's the same way on the Net. Because YOU know you're a real person behind that character, it's easily to be personally hurt by someone else lashing out; but try not to take it personally. Yes, it's incredibly rude to threaten anyone over a game ><. But try not to let it mess up your experience of the game, the other guy will forget about it in a few minutes anyway.

You know, it's not really bothering me as much as it's the fact that this person is going out of his way to make my playing time on FFXI miserable. I enjoy playing this game, I enjoy talking with my friends, at the time, I was enjoying guarding a friend of mine's party in Yhoator from Gobby trains. Then the **** hit the fan, all the sudden with a /tell from him.
And the worst part about this whole thing, is that this person is supposedly a well respected person.

I agree. Being a former Counter-Strike player I ran into a LOT of these types of people. Eventually, I learned the best way to deal with it is to laugh at it. If they say something like "im going to kil u 4 real!" just reply "Good luck with that over the internet." or something like that. If they keep goin to the point that it's annoying because of the spam, blist. Or like someone else said, simply call a GM and don't stress it. Some people like to act "big" over the internet. Not sure why, but it's not worth it to drag yourself down figuring it out.
I remember one guy during CS was getting angry that I kept killing him every round him so he started to call me gay etc (the fact that he immediatly uses that as an insult shows how intelligent he is, I'm not, but so what IF I was?). Eventually he said something along the lines of "Suck my ****!" So I just replied (over the mic) "Fine! I will!! Give me your address!!" he went silent for a few seconds, then just said "Um... what?" "You told me to suck your ****! So give me your address then!!" he left after that XD I wouldn't suggest doing that in FF though since they may be able to call a GM for you asking for an address, but you get the idea.
You don't know the answer to why people act big over the internet? lol come on.......
How about... they have no fear of retaliation... they know no one can harm them over the internet.. they can't pick on someone in the same sense in real life... they are scared beings and the only way to make themselves feel good is to put others down...
