Hey everyone,

Having finally reached 30 with my Red Mage, I breathed a sigh of relief. My 32 Black Mage was now cleared till 60. Thank the force (or spirits, or God, or what have you). That leg of my journey was over. Now... on to Black Mage.

Well, I realized quickly that Garlaige Citadel would only last me for so long, and I'll be heading to the Crawlers' Nest very soon. So, being the obsessive compulsive that I am, I started going about the arduous task of obtaining a map for the Nest (I need maps of every area I visit, and will bend over backwards to obtain those maps).

Enter.... the Selbina Clay quest. I remember very clearly the groan I let out when I realized what lay ahead of me. Damn it, this was going to cut out leveling, farming, crafting, and all the other things us power gamers do. It was gonna slow me down in my goal of being the best! Damn it! "Ah well," I thought. May as well get it started....

So, I set my home point in Selbina and started a systematic run from zone to zone, obtaining the imprints and then warping back. Rinse and repeat. Just another thing to do so I could get back to leveling...

This is where my enlightenment began. As I went from zone to zone, acquiring imprints and reading what was inscribed on each monument, I started realizing... this place has a history. And a deep one, at that. Square-Enix has done a marvelous job giving life to Vana'Diel, and here I was taking it for granted and just grinding along like all us other fools.

Not only does each monument give a brief history on the area, it also has Gwinheim Ironheart's personal feelings inscribed on them. Very briefly, it states his thoughts as well as the hardships he has gone through to get from place to place, and almost each monument leaves an open-ended thought to let our imaginations take and run with. What exactly ARE the glowing spires of Bubumiru Penninsula? Discover the monument and you just might find out... Why have the Elvaan not yet orgainzed an army to raid Ghelsba Outpost? Find the monument and discover...

In addition to learning some more of Vana'Diel's history, I also had the pleasure of helping others out in some of the low level zones these monuments are located in. I will never forget the onslaught of thanks after a hapless young lad ran up to me in panic, screaming he was poisoned and begging for a cure. A simple Cure II brought him to his knees in gratitude, saying he would have cried if he had died again. That gave me a good feeling that I haven't felt much as of late.

Anyway, the point of this ramble is the point that many posts have been making as of late. And a point that I just recently have subscribed to. Take the time to discover the world of Vana'diel. Yes, it is a game. Yes, we do have real life to worry about. However, when you log in, you are placing that real life on hold for the 2 or 3 hours you are in Vana'diel. Enjoy the experience. Don't let it drive you crazy trying to get to level X or getting Y amount of gil to purchase item Z so you can then move on to level X.

Oh, and take the time to do the Selbina Clay Quest. Not only do you get your Nest map from it, it's an excellent way to learn some history behind all the areas you've been to but knew nothing about. Plus, all the gil you get makes up for all your chocobo and Tele-taxi costs. :)

I agree.

If you read the monuments...you can discover a lot.

Personally, I am currently working on a theory that the wars during the Age of Magic were based no only on the racial conflicts, but also based on religious tendencies...

I think there might have been another religion out there besides the Goddess of the Dawn believers. And eventually, I will either prove my statement, or disprove it.

I had a ton of fun with the Selbina Clay Quest. I wanted to get the Crawlers Nest Map as everyone I was playing with always treated me like a noob because I hadn't been playing as long as them; but none of them had this map!

Setting my HP in Selbina I began Warping around the world. It took me an entire day to find all but the two really hard ones. As I ran around reading the tablets I began telling my LS about what each one said.

"He taught the Quadav how to use steal! That *******!"

and other fun comments were all to be heard. By the end, when I told them about how ___________________________________, they were all enthralled and several of them went out to get specifics! It was a fun time, I suggest you go and do the same!

That being said, what a miserable quest this is. 5 monuments in, and I gave up for a while. Warp is not the blessing it usually is, since there are no chocos in Selbina. I've been chocoing to the monument, getting the rubbing, warping to Sandy, and chocoing to Selbina. Takes way too long. I'm also getting irritated at people saying, "C'mon! It's fun and it's great gil!" What, 30K? I'm spending 15 hrs doing this for 30K? I'm 2 levels into CN, and the map has yet to factor in AT ALL. However, from what I understand I could be there for a while, so I'll have to finish that god-forsaken clay quest soon...

Arondight, didn't know you could write something other than insults lol. Good read seriously. I loved the Selbina Clay quests myself. I tried to do it in order as well so I could follow the story as it developed. I liked how ironheart's daughter took over for him during the Windy-area and continued the journey.

At first, when I got a couple of the Stone Monuments, I never did bother to read them. I traded my clay and went on my way. But somewhere in the midst of stumbling into one, I started to read them and realized just how beautiful they were.

I still have yet to finish my monuments quest. I've gotten lost enough times in the Nest that I really feel no need to rush for a map. I don't bother looking for the monuments, I just wait till I run into them. It's sorta more thrilling for me that way, if that doesn't sound strange ^^

Here, here to taking the time to realize that it's more than just a world filled with monsters to bash and brutalize. Behind the NPCs and the quests lies a story here and there. A world filled with its own special history to learn.

Here's to exploring!!

Yes, but mind if I take it one step farther? I am still on my "Jueno High" (still blaming you Merodi!^^)...

Here's a toast to wondering, to the first time you leave your home town, to the first time you see The Grand Duchy of Jueno, to your first time on an airship, to your first NM kill, to the first time you die only to be raised by some random white mage, to the first time you see the sunset against the Valkrum Dunes, to the first time you fall in love with that one girl or guy and possibly get married, to getting to level 75 and then turning around and helping that new lvl one question mark try to figure out how to do his job and farm properly and him or her not realize that you are at the top...

I raise my glass of ale to all of those people who can see the world here, and see it as an extended family made up of all sorts of people.

Good and bad, Devilwolfpack and Lunarian, New Adventurer and Kirin Captivator alike.

I ask that you remember that...

For at the end, you will want to find yourself standing back at the beginning with those you started with...

And to me at least, that is the soul of this game.

I really enjoyed this quest as well. I did it with a good friend from my LS and with my teleports and both of us having warp we did this quest in no time! (We did it at level 36) We also did it in one sitting of 9 hours! o_o; It was so interesting learning all about the history of vanadiel and i think that more people should take on this quest. Currently I would like to get to the last two monuments but that might take a while.

I have one last clay tablet to get, the one in Batallia Downs. I've been thinking about going there for a while but I think i'll do it tonight. The glacier is no friend to anyone, but I know that if a couple friends come along we can all make it!

Anyone want to go? Say, 6 or 7 pm cst? Send me a tell if you notice i'm around. I'll probably be heading out then!

The one in Sauromugue Champaign is sweet. It's got some great history, and a nice finish.

I need that one, but I doubt I'll be able to make it until 9PM EST (8PM your time).

EDIT: Never mind, change of plans. I'll send you a /tell in-game.
