I'm curious. They say these have hidden effects, but have any of you proven or tested them? I have the Light and Dark staves, and I'm about to go and see if Carbuncle's cost really is reduced (assuming it works with SMN subbed). I'm just wondering. Cuz I'm nosy sometimes :p

I only know two of them myself.

Dark Staff - carries an effect similar to the RDM spell refresh. Is also stackable w/ refresh, meaning that if you have one equiped and someone casts refresh on you, you're going to regain mp even faster.

Earth Staff - absorbs 20% of damage (i think just physical damage, but I could be wrong). which would be why you occassionally see high lvl PLD using this staff (though to my mind a Gluttony Sword with a shield would be just as good).

That's slightly incorrect. Dark Staves only have added mp regeneration whilst medding, ie if you have a dark staff equipped and you're sitting to regain HP and MP, you'll regain an extra 10 MP per click. Yes, it is stackable with refresh insofar as you can be refreshed and still get the normal 3 MP back every few seconds, and still get the added 10 MP extra per normal med click. Dark Staff, however, does not make your mp gauge fill faster in speed. Only quantity of MP regained.

Elemental Staves are very useful. Yes, they do have meager avatar perpetuation cost reductions, and yes, it still works with Summoner subbed. In addition to that, elemental staves make all spells of their corresponding element slightly stronger, while making spells of their opposing element slightly weaker. Something to keep in mind if you're a mage that bursts.

Thanks for the correction.

Dark staves interest me as an Elv PLD. It would seem to me that having one in your inventory, and having a macro to switch to it (and from it) in between battles would be a nice boost for the mp-lacking elvaan.

[Edit: If I could get through a day where I don't have to edit at least half my posts, I'd be happy.]

My set's pld uses one when medding. It's awesome.

As a bard I carry light and earth staves along with my signa. I've actually yet to get a resist when switching in my staves, where I've gotten the occasional resist on buffed up ants while using my signa.

Songs such as requiem and ballad are light based. I've noticed them last just a tad bit longer.

Elegy is earth based and crucial for more difficult NMs and HNMs. I've yet to see a resist since purchasing my earth staff.

I've actually been so impressed with how the staves have affected my songs, I'm purchasing both fire and thunder staves to switch in with minuet and madrigal, my two most played melee songs.

Which reminds me. Are there any other equips which carry the mp-medding boost that Dark Staves carry?

Seer's Tunic adds MP regeneration while medding+1, and the Royal Guard's Mace adds MP Regeneration while medding+7, but I think that's only under certain conditions.

It's the Whoop-*** effect! The damage is noticeable with the corresponding staff equipped. At least, that's what I tell myself to justify getting all the elem. staves.

/em waves goodbye to her gil.

Yes, the avatar's costs are reduced, in case you haven't tested it yet. I have that on authority, and by that I mean I've seen it happen with a SMN in my party. And yes, tests have been run by a few BLMs on the elemental staves. They work. Yeah, kinda obvious, I know, but you asked.

Someone in my LS posted this link a little while ago. It has latent effects and hidden effects of some equipment. You can also see the elemental staves hidden effect at http://ffxi.cannotlinkto/
