Maybe one of the higher level fishers here can answer this.
If my fishing skill is 12 and I'm wearing the 4 pieces of fishing gear (+4 to fishing total) making my fishing level 16 now (atleast I think that's how it works), can I still level up on fish that cap at 16?
In other words, does the game distinguish between actual skill and bonus skill? Or does it just take into account your total skill at the time when rewarding skill-ups?
(And yes I know I should have asked this in the tradeskill forum but I trust you guys more than them).

Your base skill of 12 will still get you skill ups on a skill cap fish of 16 even though the gear puts your skill at 16.

Also I've found that when you close to caping on a certian fish, say 4 lvs or so. Take the gear off. This helped me gain points, somewhat faster.

Skill ups are are kinda slow on copper frogs, but you dont have to shell out a lot of gil to fish them.

Try East Ronfaure, Cheval Salmon and Shining Trout should skill you with relative ease to 18-19.

at that level i find that east ron with fly lure composite rod works best for Cheval salmon or shining trout.

When i reach 20 I went to the little lake in la theine plateu directly below the crag, there you can catch giant cat fish and the cocasional red terrapin (cap in the 50s)
For those, a frog lure and composite works or minnow. Cat fish don't stack for some reason but is fairly easy to pull up around 20 with fishing clothes on.
That lake in La Theine have taken my friend all the way to 56, albeit slower than other place at later levels but for 20s-35 ish its probly the best place to level. Terrapin sells for about 650 a piece to the guild which is nearby in Selbina. Cat fish sells for 100 ish but does not stack so go with an empty bag.
Another spot is Jugner forest

Composite Rod, and Fly Lure, if you don't mind replacing a Carbon, go for using a carbon, but they will get snapped ocasionally because of Arrowwood Logs. Sorry I didn't state this info in my original post ^^
Just wanted to let you all know that I changed from Copper Frogs (I think they're an endangered species since i only caught 4 in 4 HOURS!!) to Shining trout/Cheval Salmon.
And I didn't even see your posts about it till this morning so that's kinda funny (but Thank you Germonick ^^). Anywho I started out with a Comp Rod and the fly lure but I lost quite a few fish due to them being too small so I shelled out the 2k and got myself a glass fibre and I got 2 fishing levels in about 2 hours ^^. Not bad!
(Thought I'd share that so anyone else near my fishing skill can try it out)
OH and FYI, I find either the Norhtern part of the river in E.Ronfaure or the Southern part are the best for catches. I didn't have much luck any time I tried to fishing anywhere in the middle.
(Oh yea, I also made quite a collection of fishing rods killing off the gobby fishers between casts)

This was kinda usefull to me. But word of advise hit La Theine when you hit around 22. Skill ups are great and you catch Red Terrapin. It's just too bad no one buys Red Terrapin. But the best way to make gil for me so far, is fishing somewhere where you exp while catching moat carp. Another good one is when you hit around 24 fish of the boat with a Composite and crayfish paste you catch *Nebonites* or however the hell it's spelled. Hope this helps a bit. Also I'm currently a lvl 23 fisherman and I'm looking for a Fishing Linkshell so if there is someone out there with one send me a /tell *Verdigo* or reply to this thread

Does anyone know any good websites for fishing?
A stack of terrapins will go to NPC for around 7k. After server updates when guild prices get reset for a few days they go for 800 at the fishing guild a piece for 9.6k a stack. Albeit you probly won't be catching many at that level, I usually came away with about a stack per sesson in addition to cat fish.
As for fishing sites go to Mysterytour, they will have link to a fishing site with a very good forum, created by an NA to chronicle her Lu shang quest. Most members have lu shangs and are very high level fishing. As of right now mysterytour is down so I wasn't able to paste the link.

I am lvl 24 fishing currently. I got 2 skill points in 3 hours last nite using Insect Paste at Jugnar lake. I used about 30 stacks on Insect Paste. 3 Hours later, I got 3.5 stacks of Moat Carp and tons of other fish too.
