I am copying and pasting this from the topic I started in the main forums.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hello.  Since getting my Mentor status many, many months ago, I've never actually put my mentor flag up much. Maybe because the only time I see people with it on are when I am in a PT and why would a newbie in a higher lvl zone need to ask a question? It was more of a show-off thing (not all the time, of course, but more often than not) to show other's that they've been playing the game X amount of time. There was also not much of a need to put it on, since there were not many new players running around, even in town (on Bismarck anyway).
But now with the release of CoP and the European players joining us, I plan on keeping my Mentor flag up as much as I possibly can.
I've always gotten a kick out of helping people. When they ask for gil, I would simply tell them how and what to farm for their lvl and they always thank me for taking the time to do so without/shouting "STFU n00b! We all worked for our gil, so you should too!" Yea, it might be laziness on their part, but it could also be ignorance.
New players don't fully understand the concept of farming and then selling the drops to NPC's or the AH or even in Bazaar. I know when I first started, I wondered why none of the mobs were dropping gil and didn't know what to do with half the stuff they dropped (I know I threw out a TON of Silk Threads when I first started).
We should show them what to farm: Beehive chips, crystals and Silk Threads are great for starting out with and how to navigate the tricky AH.
I plan on spending a lot of time helping the new EU players and welcome them into our world, just like many people did for me when I was new. The fact is, whether we accept it or not, is that most Europeans think that we, as Americans, are fat, greedy, selfish war-mongers who think of no one but ourselves. Let's help them see that we can be friendly, encouraging, patient and informative.
So, Bismarck Mentors. I urge you to put on your flags and be patient with our new friends overseas. You might just make a great LS mate or powerful ally in the process.
Sorry for the mushiness, but it had to be said ^^.
I agree. I'm no FFXI veteran, but I know enough to help out a newbie. I'll be putting my Mentor flag up and giving tips.
And yeah, if someone asks for gil.. don't give it to them : ( Teach 'em how to make it instead!
It's like that old Chinese saying, "Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, feed him for life."
My flag is always up when I'm not busy, but I'll be keeping an eye out for anyone in need of help.
Keep in mind, the more we help them now the better players they'll be later! I'm sure we all don't want a 100 page bad players thread to ever hit our server :/
If I am not doin anything and I see a question mark running by I always send them a tell askin them if they have any question. I think it is all in our best intrest to help these players learn how to play the game the right way becouse at some point in time you might be in a pt with them or need help yourself.
Theres only one reason i dont have my mentor flag up, its the fact i dont like the look of it, i prefere to see my pearl rather than some "mint" looking thing.
But i always try to help where and when i can ^^
