Disclaimer: This is NOT a rant about people checking me. It is more of an amusement and curiosity.
Some players go off about people checking them, but did you ever stop to wonder why they check?
Now, blatancy (showing off) is going to get you checked, for sure. I get a kick out of it when I'm messing around, or playing Guardian in the dunes, with about 5 gobbies on me, then, suddenly, drop them all with a Cyclone (which is a real rush, by the way *grin*). Next thing I know, I get a half dozen checks. I hardly consider it insulting, but rather, flattering, that something I did warranted all that attention. But, this is where my curiosity originates:
I've had many occasions where I was just wandering along a zone and EVERYONE I pass checks me out. I wasn't doing anything out of the ordinary, and and there's nothing super odd about my gear, although, I admit, Kestra doesn't look like most Red Mages her level (Partial RSE, Earth Doublet, Red Cap, Lantern Shield, Dagger). So...what then, is it, that gets me noticed so much? Is it the gear, or my name?
That brings me to the second part of this (which was inspired by Trizzoro's post about seeing more people from here ingame). There are characters in Bismarck that I've never met, never spoken to, never partied with, and yet I NEVER forget their names. For some reason, they just seem to stick. I bet if I asked any of you seasoned players to name the characters that hang around outside the residence in Windurst Woods, or the two that are ALWAYS at the entrance at Bastok Markets, you could tell me without hesitation. Seeing them becomes so common, they may as well be NPCs >^.^<
But, since I started playing, there have just been certain characters whos' names I just never seem to forget. I can be anywhere in Vana'diel and suddenly be like "oh! There's Ocelott, or Kestry, or Chupacabra again." even though I have no clue who they are. Most of them get a friendly wave from me now, or a few words of greeting (They probably think I'm crazy LOL). Even so, I've managed to make a few friends that way too, so I guess it's just interesting, how much your character's name can affect someone you don't even know.
I got followed all around Windurst one day by an Elvaan I didn't know, who thought I was "Kestry" LOL.
P.S. Tweed, I'm not stalking you, really! It's just a HUGE coincidence, hahaha.
