Clearing unpopular postsFollow

So when some posters discover that their great thought/plan/idea, was no where near as amazing to the rest of the world they seem to have a tendance to take their post and go away leaving some nonsense or indgnant message in its place.

Obviously the post was so bad that even the poster thought it should be gone.

Would there be anyway, on an edit, if the character count for the post drops by over a certain percent (say 90%), that the post automaticly get marked as sub-default (or better yet, if they try to do so, lock the text in so that it can not be edited)?

I would think that there would be no code for this, and it would have to be heavily moderated, since a computer can't tell if an edit is a legit change or an entire post change.

But I know nothing about coding, so my opinion probably means very litte.

Wouldn't make it too complex

Create a character count (not a terribly challenging bit of code) of the post prior to editing, then create a character count of the edited text.

if ((Old Count * 0.1) > New Count) then {do something here}

If you feel a post you make is too stupid to exist, Edit it, delete the content, and replace it with something like "edited" so the blank post filter deosn't eat it.

Thats actually what I'm having issue with Kaolian: people who do that to try to get out of an discussion they are horribly wrong on.

Just think there should be some sort of cost to making a stupid post/thread then editing it out of existance when its clear people think you are an idiot.

If someone says something that stupid, make sure you "quote original" somewhere in the thread.

They can't edit that.

methinks you wooshed the admins

best way to combat it is to quote it before the delete-edit, but that doesn't do much for thread long arguments unless you quote every post the person makes Smiley: glare

i agree though, it aggrivates me when people do that, especially if i miss an argument, and i can't read half of it come someone didn't want to own up to what they posted on the intarwebz

Except if it were baby photos, it would be like looking at before and afters of Michael Jackson. Only instead of turning into a white guy, he changes into a chick!

That's so mean, yet so enjoyable!

I don't understand the issue. If someone realizes they said something monumentally stupid and go back and edit that out, haven't you accomplished your goal? Unless your true goal is simply to troll them for being stupid, then wouldn't quoting the post in its entirety nullify any attempts at editing out their stupidity?

I just freaking hate being in a discussion or reading one, where someone had a snit and replaced everything they wrote with <edited> at best or some version of "its my ball and I'm leaving" at worst. It ruins the continuity of the discussion and can throw other peoples responses completely out of context if they failed to quote the edited post first.

Quoting is the way to go I guess in most cases. In retrospect I suspect posts that are changed to <edited> or something like that probably are getting hit with karma anyway

So your true goal is to troll the stupid. You should definitely quote them then.

As Kao has said, we can't ban stupid. However, we can sure as hell troll the dumbasses.
