Currently there's really no good place to discuss Pankration, Chocobo Raising/Racing, et cetera, in the Final Fantasy XI forums.

For Pankration, especially, there's going to be a LOT of possible combinations, and temperments, and ways to get traits -- ideas that cannot be easily discussed in the General forum. In the general forum, for example, so many threads get created that the Chocobo and Pankration related posts get quickly buried.

I would like to suggest a dedicated forum(s) for the activities in FFXI other than End Game (which has its own forum), Crafting/HELM (tradeskill), and leveling (Job forums). While Chocobo raising/racing may or may not rate its own forum, the complexity of Pankration I think definately warrants it. When the Colleseum is released, that will probably be a whole separate activity as well. Even if a dedicated forum is not deemed necessary for each of those activities, a consolidated "extracurricular activities" forum can be set up for all of the above. Maybe even ballista could be included?

Sorry if this has already been suggested, I looked through the first several pages and couldn't find anything similar.

For a while back in March, my journal was available for Chocobo Raising and Racing discussion.

Nobody ever used it. Smiley: glare

I'd be more than happy to reopen it as "FFXI Extracurricular Activities", if anyone would actually use it as such.

Except if it were baby photos, it would be like looking at before and afters of Michael Jackson. Only instead of turning into a white guy, he changes into a chick!

Yeah, the main issue is that I need to know from one of the code-monkey admins (Illia, Dana, and I think Rale) whether or not threads can be moved between journals and forums.

That way we can (1) de-clutter =10 by moving these into my journal; and (2) when someone posts a thread about more general FFXI topics, they can be moved back to =10 (and (2a) when someone posts a thread that has nothing to do with FFXI, it can be moved to =28 =22.)

EDIT: confirmed by Nix on IRC that threads can, at least, be moved from journals to forums as appropriate. I'll settle for that for now, and just annoy admins as necessary to lock threads & point OPs to the journal as needed. Smiley: laugh

You have to make a thread with a link in it and have it get bumped every so often leading turning it into a page claiming thread. After it hits 70~+ pages and countless sticky requests the admins make the forum!

That's how we did it with all the server forums at least. Smiley: dubious

Can one of the admins please address the request? I'm curious what their thoughts are....

The more you section a forum off in to sub sections, the more you fragment its community and in the long run decrease membership in the main forum itself. I think there are already too many FFCI forums, and I say this not because I end up taking care of them, but because of the effect they have already had upon the FFXI community here. You guys are losing numbers, and I think that plays a small part in it. THat's my 2 cp at least.

Kaolian, while I do feel that in some ways that you are correct here, and that splintering people into different areas for certain things can be detrimental to a forum's growth, I'm also conflicted in the fact that I like to see information divided and presented in a neater, more organized fashion. Finding posts about Pankration, or Besieged in between the general banter in =10 can be aggrivating.

In which way Kaolian? People visiting the forums, or people playing the game?

people visiting the forums. THe FFXI forum used to be the largest population on the forums here. Certanly the merger unplesentness affected a large portion of those numbers, but the drawdown started when the server forums were added. People started visiting those instead of the main forums, and eventually were only visiting those, but the server forums themselves don't have enough population to be sustainable in their own right for a server population. Its the same type of thing that Asylum is dealing with right now. Too many potential posters got sucked into the OOT instead of makign their way to asylum, and while slow, there is attrition to the base regular poster population.

Are there other reasons that the FFXI forums are losing population? Sure. Dozens of them, most probably a larger role than the server fragmentation, but it doesn't help.

I can understand your concerns. However, it might also be possible that people don't visit the forums to discuss Pankration, for example, because there are easier places to do it -- like http://forums.ffxiclopedia.org/viewforum.php?f=91, which is a ffxiclopedia forum devoted solely to Pankration. There is a similar one for Chocobo Racing/Raising.

For all I know there might be good information out there on pankration in the general forum that I just can't find cause its buried on page 10. People that want to talk on the general forum are going to do so regardless of whether there is a Pankration forum or not (for example) ... but people that WANT to discuss it most likely won't post ANYWHERE on the site, because its too hard to keep a discussion together. Same thing goes with Chocobo racing, et cetera.
