It seems to me that Item Lookup and Mob Lookup have been removed from the links on the left hand side. I couldn't find anywhere why this might be. Has it been decided by the Alla team that the options for Lookup were too handy for non-paying users?

Which site? I'm guessing FFXI from your sig but it's always good to ask.
If you can see the search box in the left hand side bar, you can use it for item and mob look up. It wont work for forum search however, you still need to have premium to have that feature.

There is a search box in the sidebar which will search for items, quests, mobs, etc. and display results in tabs for you.

I did that, and at first I thought it didn't work... turns out the results are so far down the page with so much dead space in between that I thought the feature was broken.
