The point is, they don't ask, they just misuse our mailing address without our permission. I would have no problem if Alla's gave us the OPTION of recieving a 'free' magazine (I'll deal with that term in a minute). The problem is, they don't, they just send you something you don't want.
It's akin to 'mail-in rebates'. If you wanted to discount a product, why not just discount it. The reason is that in their dishonesty, companies know that most people won't be able to jump through the five hoops you usually have to complete in order to get back the money they promise. Its disingenuous.
As for it being 'free'. Ask yourself this... why would a publisher want to send you a magazine for nothing? They certainly aren't doing it out of the goodness of their hearts. There's got to be a sound business reason. It's either because this 'magazine' is mosly ads for products they want to sell, or its because its only 'free' for a limited period of time, and they expect to go on charging your credit card without telling you. In any case, you can bet your bottom dollar (literally) that there will be some cost to you for this 'free magazine' If there wasn't, they wouldn't do it.
Hence, they are taking my money without my permission, and that's... well... theft.
So no, don't flag my account. Fix your registration screen so I have the option to say NO if that's what I want. Making your users jump through hoops because you sold your soul to a magazine publisher is disingenuous, underhanded, and misleading. It isn't a solution, its a cop-out, and I won't support it.
