A heads up to the admins.Follow

#1 Oct 05 2006 at 7:42 AM Rating: Decent
I cut and pasted this from my WoW forum post.

So I go check my e-mail and what do I see but 2 e-mails from "gibberish"@allakhazam.com. Interesting I thinks to myself, braving the hazards I open one and it is filled with gibberish and a blank pic, ie: it claims to have a pic in the e-mail but it is nothing but a blank section of e-mail which amazingly enough has a hyperlink hidden in it. I'm not so stupid as to click that crap so away it went.

A heads up to the admins that someone is using your domain name as a dummy to send crap and to my fellow members to watch out for this junk. The e-mail it was sent to is the one I use specifically for gaming and gaming only so it had to have been gotten from one of the sites I belong to.

I've been getting those fake allakhazam emails since I started working here in 2002. It's probably because you have publicemail set to Yes, and bots crawl the profile pages to grab email addresses.

there are ways of preventing your SMTP server from being spoofed... admins might want to look into it or PM me and i can put you in touch with someone who can FIX it for you.

I didn't think there was any way to enforce other people not using your name in the FROM line or mucking with headers?

There's address verification services, DNS verification services, and blacklist services that you can use ... but of course there's always ways around those, and they'll probably slow the servers while the checks are being performed.

As always, you can slow the flow of spam but you'll never kill it entirely.

Same holds true for trolls and sockpuppets as well, unfortunately :/
