Good for them. The internet isnt something exclusive that the US owns though. They might think that they do, but in all honesty they should know better. Regardless, I for one would welcome the reduced amount of people online trying to camp Heqet. So go US!
That aside, this is the forum to escape from daily troubles and to relax on FFXI. Not to be confronted with rediculous proposals and bills that will never pass anyhow.

UK already has this, US will get it too, was swept in quietly. Governments know how to work this to get people to agree with it, they will say it's to stop stuff like child **** then use it to block other stuff (things they don't like, copyright infringments etc).

US courts have already done it, several times, it didn't need Congress to make it happen.

The SOPA act goes a step further and would grant businesses the power to shut down web sites without due process, without involving the courts, and without ever having to defend their actions. No, we don't. The Digital Economy Act (DEA) is a lot nicer than SOPA. This is why:
- Copyright holders must have the IP address of the offender.
- Invalid notices can be ignored. ISPs don't even have to write down why they ignored it.
- Email (usually) sent to offender, telling them to stop it. (user's personal details will not be shared with the copyright holder without a court order)
- Repeat offenders (act is vague on how this is classified) will have their internet restricted/removed (again, vague).
- Offenders can simply swap ISPs and the whole history of this has disappeared.
The SOPA tries to do the opposite. It tries to take down the website access rather than restrict user access. ASCII art ftw:

The user-ISP link is broken, but user's can just swap ISP. ISPs are responsible for upholding copyright.

The country-site link is broken in the DNS, but users can just type the IP address of the site. Sites are responsible for upholding copyright.
Of course this is a crude representation (since it's not the ISP->Site link being broken, but the whole set of American IP addresses being affected).
It's a terrible act if it goes through, but as one guy put it: "I see SOPA as a stimulus package for Asia and Europe and their Internet economies." (this is in reference to the fact that sites can just migrate elsewhere and avoid all this stuff)

Yep, it'll cut down on internet traffic in general by about two hundred percent as well. The bill is, unfortunately, worded so vaguely and horribly that a massive amount of internet content could be taken down for potential violations. Websites like 'That Guy With The Glasses' who use video footage of films or video games could be removed and blocked. There is a massive potential for heavy abuse of this bill, and that's why there is a lot of opposition against it.
I have no problem with genuine anti-piracy methods, but this will create far more problems than it solves. The internet is the purest form of free speech there is, and a bill like this could destroy it.
I emailed my senators a long time ago about this already. I should start doing it more often to get my point across.

Yeah, but most of that 'potential' won't be realised. Practically speaking anything very broad can only be enforced sporadically. Perhaps this will still be more than is desirable, but the main problem is the injustice that will arise from the abuse of an unnecessarily broad ambit/discretion, not that it will be used to shut down every website on the internet.

I might feel the same way if a governmental body were the sole enforcers here, but that's not the concern. The concern is that private corporations will also have the power to "shut down" websites. I'm not comfortable yielding that much power to entities whose sole purpose is to maximize profit over all else.

If this had already been available, I wonder what we would have seen when Apple misplaced the new iPhone way back when. Would they kill access to any site that had pictures/videos of their "stolen" intellectual property? Block sites that have information/reviews on their top secret product?
