We just got told that the in-laws of my sister in law are requesting "no adult gift giving" at their house on Christmas day, as their other son is presently unemployed and cannot participate. This means they are only giving stuff to the grandkids, and want us to do the same so he doesn't feel bad.
I'm rather relieved. They're pretty well off (the grandparents) and getting stuff for them is difficult.
We've adopted this sort of policy for years now. A long time ago we switched to an adult gift lottery (kinda like a secret santa thing). Each person would draw two names and get gifts for just those two people in the $50 range. That kept costs from getting ridiculous, and you could buy an actual decent gift for someone. At some point, we decided that was still too much of a pain, so now we just do a book exchange. Everyone brings a book, and we draw numbers and pick/steal books. It works well, is fun, and doesn't cost much (in time or money).
Of course, we get the kids gifts. Cause they're kids.
