I don't get this. It's not ok for you to offend them, but it's ok for them to offend you and force you to eat something you didn't want to?

Oh, I wasn't offended, just slightly grossed out. I wasn't eating meat because the only kind of meat I really liked wasn't available there.

I essentially paid a lot of money for them to show me their culture and bacon is American culture, isn't it?

On the one hand, I'm offended that this is how foreigners see us.

On the other hand, I can't say it's not justified. If you eat meat and aren't a muslim/jew, you probably eat bacon.

And if you don't eat meat, there's a good chance you'll eat synthetic bacon.

For the record, I wasn't entirely serious about the whole American culture = bacon thing.

I mean, you guys actually do have stuff to offer apart from unhealthy food. It's definitely a part, though.

Islamic/Jewish meat practices are disgusting, though. In the way they slaughter I mean.

I found out about that chicken swinging thing last month. I was a little bit horrified...

The guy who told me about it grew up uber Jewish. I was hanging out with him and his gf (one of my best friends) when we saw a picture of the chicken swinging thing on facebook.

We were a little bit horrified. He was kinda quiet for a little while, and then was like "You know, growing up with it I often forget just how crazy some of these traditions are."

I try to be culturally sensitive, but pulling the head off of a chicken so that you can feel good about yourself after dumping all your sins into it is just, like, WOW. Smiley: eek

I wasn't even talking about that, I just think Kosher/Halal slaughter inflicts pointless amounts of suffering on the animal, and should be banned. I'm not an animal rights nut or anything, I like steak as much as the next guy. I just like to know my food didn't suffer for me to eat it. It's the same reason I'm against battery farmed chickens.

Halal slaughter rules are a lot more relaxed on the actual method than kosher ones (they pray more instead) and honestly, the only other places I can get meat that doesn't smell weird are the ones where you end up paying 3 times as much as in normal shops. I don't buy Asda meat, either...

Halal slaughter practices are still disgusting and should be banned.

No one buys Asda meat.

By missing two obvious ones, it almost seems like you were doomed to fail before you had even ba-con. Tur-key is to have no shame, right?

I'm limited by treaty on how many puns I can use in a day. I was at my quota, so sacrifices had to be made.

I put onions in a tomato sauce once. There's no future in it.

Something I've been considering doing for a while. Not because I'm against eating animals - they're pretty much a cornerstone of society and humans have evolved to eat meat and plants - but more for health reasons than anything.

Now, doing it just to have a healthier diet, I realize that there's a lot of meats out there that are actually good for you; mainly white meats like poultry and fish. But I think that I want to try vegetarianism, at least to try it out and see how it fits me. I can always go back to eating the healthier options, but I'm pretty sure I want to cut out red meat entirely.

Before you ask, I would likely be going ovo-lacto, meaning that eggs and dairy products would be fine with me.

How many of you guys are vegetarians/pescetarians? Any tips for beginners? If you were vegetarian in college, did you have any trouble? The school cafeteria doesn't exactly have the best vegetarian options...

Cheese can have as much or more saturated fat than red meat. Eggs more cholesterol. If eating meat is not an ethical issue, it's a bit of a hard sell to call it a health issue, when there are so many non-meat items that can be much unhealthier than a burger.

If you want to eat more healthy, I'd recommend eliminating processed/preserved foods and chemicals from your diet such as glutins, nitrates and other preservatives, pesticides, ripeners etc.

I thought the general consensus on eggs was that the amount of Omega-3 contained in them countered the high cholesterol levels.

Ya, I had heard that the good stuff in eggs outweighs the "bad" stuff. Especially for someone on a "no meat" vegetarian diet, an egg is a good source of low calorie protein. Depending on the egg size, it's what... 60-80 calories?

Now cheese on the other hand. If you go from eating a bunch of meat to instead eating a bunch of cheese, I can't imagine that being all that beneficial of a life style change. When I started eating less, cheese was one of the first things that had to be cut drastically.

It all depends on the person their physiology and of course quantities. Eggs are high in cholesterol. If you have or are susceptible to heart disease you probably don't want to be getting all your protein from eggs.

The same can be said about red meat. It's an awesome source of protein. It's high in saturated fats. It's also pushed to be a main component of every meal. No one needs 1/2 pound hamburger to round out a healthy meal, and every meal doesn't have to have meat. But 8 ounces of good grass fed beef once every couple days can go a long way in meeting your protein demands.

Cheeses can be really high in fats and calories without providing much in the way of protein.

Soy lima kidney beans are a great source of protein. Nuts too, but they're high in fat. Yogurts (be very careful of added sugars and stuff) will provide some without also adding much of the fats.

Consumption of dietary cholesterol has a less significant impact on your body's serum cholesterol than other dietary considerations, especially intake of saturated and trans fats. So while the levels seem high, eating a few eggs daily really isn't a concern.

And even then, there have been studies* indicating that the saturated fat may not be as bad as we think.

*No, I really can't name them, this second part I'm only recalling from a Men's Health, so take it with a grain of salt. Or don't, if you're salt sensitive. Or something.
