I posted this in WoW Gen, but I thought I'd share with you all, too.

I have my email set up on my iPhone. Around 11:00 am this morning, I received a few emails from Blizzard about a password reset. I was frowning at my email inbox, when the emails disappeared before my eyes.

HACKED!!!!

So I immediately changed my email password, then reported my account has hacked on Battle.net. Added an authenticator so this can't happen again.

For ***** and giggles, I look at my account page, and lo and behold, I have a month of game time, with a recurring subscription set to expire on 11/20/11!

I may be playing WoW for a month on some Chinese hacker's dime.

Oh, I know he was Chinese, because my email shows me login activity, and someone from China has been logging into my email account. I suppose it could be a proxy, but whateva.

They activated a suspended account with their own money to steal your stuff?

Happened to me a while ago too. They weren't able to recover my character's stuff because it was gone too long, so I had to start again from scratch.

Then I got bored with WoW again.

Yup, the same thing happened with a friend of mine's account. Hacked him, re-upped his old WoW account, and sold all of his items.

China is crazy. Like, frighteningly crazy.

That's what they did with mine.

I contacted Blizzard, got my account back, got my stuff back, changed the email and password, etc. and ran around on the gold farmer's dime for about a week. But once the hacker realized he didn't have control of my account anymore, he did a charge back on the payment and Blizzard closed the account again Smiley: lol. That's been over 2 years ago and I've not bothered to try and get it restored again. I doubt I'll ever play WoW again but if I want to, I know that this way it's not going to get hacked again.

Do you use Gmail? You might be interested in this link.

Be sure to check passwords for things other than WOW, this probably wasn't just some kid who wanted to play WOW in the US. You were fortunate enough to catch the hacker as he was deleting evidence of his activity, but there is no telling what he might have gotten access to before that happened. Check your e-mail provider and make sure you follow their account recovery process ASAP.

Good luck!

No, not gmail. I've changed the password, and it was my "spam" email address, so I don't think they could've gotten much. What else could he have gotten access to?

That's the problem, one can't be certain. For example, could he have used information from your WOW account to get access to personal information or credit card information? Some of the damage might be in the form of identity theft, so don't be just write it off as a spam account -- you know it is, but others don't.

The WoW account wasn't active, I don't think they could get CC information... how could they?

I'm not trying to be difficult, I just honestly don't know how this works. How would they use the account to get that info?

When this happened to me, nothing else got compromised. Just my WoW account. And like you, my account was inactive. The farmer had to pay to have it activated again.

Not saying you shouldn't maybe keep an eye on some of your other stuff for a while and possibly change the passwords on other accounts. But you're probably ok. Seems like the new "in" thing is to steal the inactive accounts and hope the owners never notice or care.

Yeah. I'll keep my eye on stuff. I just have no idea how any of this works.

Which probably means I should stay off the internet. I'm a dream come true for those people who do steal ****. Smiley: lol

Can you see it after it gets nuked?

Xsarus sent me a PM telling me why. I mentioned a private server for WoW I play on, but didn't link anything. I just brought it up as an alternative that doesn't getting hacked or dealing with RMT. It's fine though.

If you mentioned the name of it, it might have given people something to google?

Or he could have been protecting you. Had you mentioned it on WoW General, you probably would have been rate camped by a lot of folks for a while.

Yeah, admins can see everything. Its the only way we can go back and see why a thread / poster /topic etc was nuked. Private server reference makes sense, we definitly nuke those.

Ah, I just didn't understand when you said someone would have to explain why it was nuked. Then later that you would not have expected it.

I think this was all an elaborate hoax by Blizzard. I am now committed to playing WoW for a year so I can get a free copy of Diablo III.

I am such a sucker.

Also, the hacker's AmEx was still attached to my account. I would love to report that I charged a six month subscription to WoW to that AmEx, but I don't have the conscience to do something like that. Plus he'd just dispute it.

I think Belk's hacker rated her down. Kao, get on it!!

Also, Blizzard could PAY me to play WoW and I still wouldn't. That game sucks, what is wrong with you people??!?

Hehe.

I like WoW. I just wish there were an offline version of it you could play, because I rarely do anything social in the game. Smiley: lol
