What would you do?Follow

Ok, If you got this far the question is. You work at a state agency. It's been mismanaged, full of nepotism, idiots hold the management positions and the job you do has gone from ok to slightly ok to outright dangerous and
hazardous to your health and safety. Your second level manager is never there to handle the issues and of the three first level managers one went out for several months on leave rather than dealing with things. Another had been abandoning the job and hiding all shift leaving new hires to handle things and they were quitting constantly. Finally under threat of being fired (Took almost 3 years of this person abusing things) The person
bailed off the ship.

Your present manager is a good person but was stonewalled and harassed and told to only handle the shift she works. Thus the other shifts have gone to crap and along with the constant call in's. The relief staff that
relieves you is always late and ofter thirty minutes to two hours late. Yet nothing is done about it. You often work two - three twelve hour shifts along with the other late stay overs every week. You along with the staff you work with are getting burned out and tired.

Now the media and the state has finally decided to get involved. They sent a person to talk to the regular
workers and he got an earful. Yet this person didn't write down a single thing. The winds are changing.
The Agency is changing names and such in December.

What do you do?
1. Hang in there it has to get better.
2. Step up and apply for the management positions that are opening.
3. Find another job and get away from the cluster fk that is going on.
4. Go out on medical or family leave for 3 months and come back praying things have improved.
5. Fk it where is my gun!

Assuming that I'm the one with the red scarf, I'd draw my pistol, shoot the guy that I'm locking swords with and then go after the leopard thing with the rifle.

Not actually being there myself, I can't honestly suggest what I'd do, but I know options 4 and 5 are out. However, I may use option 5 on you if you opt for option 4.

If your description is accurate, then option 3 looks like the best move. 1 is not going to happen anytime soon and, 2 if you're accurate about the newest manager isn't much of a help either since you'll get blocked as well.

There's always the fact that I don't think you can be management but that's actually irrelevant in this discussion, other than to get at least one dig in at you.

I'd go with 2. If nothing else, it will help you pad your resume in case 3 really seems like the only option. 1 seems almost apathetic, and 4 is just a slimier version of 1.

1, 4, and 5 are out. Three is your best bet, and two is possible if you know exactly what you're doing or it'll make things much worse.

Stepping up to management in a difficult environment is not a good idea. you need to develop a skill set in a supportive environment before you try to manage a situation like you've described.

On the other hand, maybe with all the attention there will be some higher placed competent people added, which you could then work under. Risky though, and likely very high stress.

Well,
The Job is one of the better paying ones in the area I make 16.00 an hour. Plus paid Medical and 401k.
I'm due for another raise. and I recieved an extra 10 dollars a month hazard pay. It's not what I made
at Dell but being over 50 now makes me one of the people that employers pass over for younger employees
that are still dumb and can be abused more.

Well, you don't just go and jump ship without another job lined up. You look while still employed. Could that make it harder to get a job, since you may not be available to interview when they want to, or because you can't start immediately and need to give 2 weeks notice? Sure, but you're gainfully employed, so take your time and get the right job, while suffering through what you currently have.

I've been a manager several times in my past jobs. Nearly every one ended with me and my full crew being laid off because it was 2nd or 3rd shift. Despite having the best production numbers out of all shifts and the happiest people and the least amount of call ins or problems. My last Management job all of my people were happy but one. Sadly you can't flush one *** hole down the toilet. I found a place for him to work alone away from the rest of the team.

As for this present job. The entrenched management has made some interesting and pretty much illegal moves to fill spots with their friends/sexual partners. One such move was done just to keep me from getting the 3rd shift management position. I've also watched them let others have the same job and gave them zilch for help and let them commit job suicide. I think that if I was given more assurances and support I might go through management hell if it would improve the place. It's the challenge that attracts me. Then again the entrenched useless management would need to go for that to happen. I think for now I'll sit and bide my time and search for another state job. Here just about everything is frozen and no new hires being done.

I'd really have to get more info on what the job entails to give accurate info.

2 if upper management is amenable to having consultants fix the operations, but always look towards 3.
