Did you ever get homesick?Follow

Back when I went to college I was suprised at how many of my classmates were homesick. Several actually gave up college and moved back within the first few weeks. I guess everyone is different in a way. I thought it was great to be away from my parents and on my own.

Moving out of home sent me over the moon. I was royally pissed off that the campus accommodation kicked us all out during vacations between term times, especially the long Summer one. Campus living was fantastic in so many ways, but the best thing about finally moving on to private rental, with two housemates, was that I never had to rely on my parents again, ever.

I knew a guy who went to a nice school on a football scholarship(or maybe it was a different sport) who dropped out of school and went home crying within his first week away from home.

I, on the other hand was glad to be out on my own. Don't get me wrong. I still love my parents and visit them at least once a week(they moved up here when my sister went to college so they could be close to both of us), but I loved being out on my own.

In hindsight, the health department should have forced me to move back in with my parents after the state of my first apartment 6 months into living there.

When I lived in Japan for three years I got homesick.

I really wanted a good hamburger. There is just something wrong when the best hamburger in the area is from McDonalds.

I still hang out with mom every weekend. I'd have a hard time moving more than a few miles.

No, but by the time I moved away from home (local area) I was fully committed to furthering my career and was willing ot make the sacrifices, knowing long term, I'd be coming "home".

Homesick? I'm just glad I got away from the rest of my family.
It's not that I don't love my family, I just ******* hate living with them.

Only time I was homesick during college was while studying abroad. Several weeks of being surrounded by a foreign language and culture was a bit outside my experience and made me upset at times. But it was only maybe 2-3 times I actually thought about it; most of the time was spent going "Hey, Mexico is awesome!" When I was actually at UD I never felt homesick; rather I'd get to missing campus life during summer Smiley: lol

When I moved to FL I felt homesick for both university life and my old home in MA where I grew up. Every now and then I still think about moving back up north, but I'm wise enough to realize it was the time period of my life I missed, not necessarily the location.

My college was 15 minutes from home, but I lived in the dorms anyway because I'd rather be prison raped than live with my mother.

This. I love my sister and mother to bits but living with them is torture, and I know having me in their personal spaces tortures them.

I rarely get homesick. All the people I care about are on the other end of a telephone if I miss them.

Mine was more of an "I hate houston and wish to be anywhere else on the planet" sick than specifically homesick. I never really had too much problem with it during college in Arizona though. Not having a car for most of it when everything on campus was about 10 miles away was annoying though.

Hey, we got admin indicators now! nice!

I don't know if I'd call it "homesickness." I think Lubbock just sucks.

I wasn't homesick when I went to college, but I went home a lot of weekends. Until I got a boyfriend, that is. Smiley: sly

I'm worried that I'll be homesick when I move to Hawaii, though. I won't be able to go home on weekends very often.

I think the bigger problem will be that everyone wants to come to you.

Well, my good friend said no one will be able to afford it, my mom hates to fly and insists she'll never be able to, and my father, the only person I'm excited to leave behind, has suggested he move here, too.

Yeah, fun...

In all fairness, my friend has since started talking excitedly about taking a trip here to visit with another friend of ours, so that's fun. Smiley: grin

Expect distant, previously unknown family members expecting to be able to stay in your house for "just a short visit."

This, although I didn't find out about the unmedicated manic depressive stuff til after she was killed. Smiley: frown After my oldest sister (who is also bipolar) told me, I was like OMG MY LIFE MAKES SO MUCH MORE SENSE NOW.

I avoided visiting whenever I could.

I wasn't even homesick when I first moved continents and no one around me spoke my language. I don't think I ever really had a place or people I saw as my permanent home.

I'm planning to change that eventually, I just don't know where my future home might be at all. Probably in Eurasia somewhere...?

Short answer: No

Longer answer: I think I would be if I had to move away from my friends. When I moved out of home it was to live with my then boyfriend (and moving out of home was great) and I started uni too, so plenty of meeting new people involved. When we split up I had my social group around me, so again it was the start of awesome single life with people I knew around rather than feeling like I was all alone and by that point I already considered the city I moved to as home (as that's where I went to uni and now work). If I had to move away from work I think I would get homesick for my current city, though I'd still visit my friends (assuming I didn't move out of the country) so I'd probably manage fairly well.

I get homesick, but for my current home, when I'm away on a vacation. I miss my dog(s), friends, the little things that I'm used to around the home.

Same here. I even would negotiate with the Dorm Manager to let me stay over holiday (you weren't supposed to) It was great being away and because she didn't have be around to blame her issues on, she got herself into enough trouble that she was forced to get help (and eventually accept that like a diabetic she needed her medication)
