I was deployed to Incirlik AB, Turkey for Operation Northern Watch (again). We'd finished up for the day and was just getting back to tent city. I think I had just thrown my gear on my rack and grabbed a cold one when my buddy turned on the TV. The first tower had just been hit and our first response was "Huh, what movie is this?". Shortly after the second tower was hit, the siren went off on base.

We scrambled back into work and got the jets ready, but the call never came out to launch. The replacement unit for us was in-route and they ended up spending a week at Ramstein. I ended up staying in-country for quite a bit longer...

I was on Alla's. Go figure, huh?

They had reported the first crash as I got into work but where still thinking of it as a place crash rather than a terrorist attack. The second plane hit right about as I was getting into the office. Alla's (the old uBB forums) had a thread running titled "Holy Crow!" where those of us with radios gave updates to those stuck without since all the news sites were crashed out with web traffic.

I didn't know anyone in New York or Washington or related to the Pennsylvania flight. I mainly thought about my son, who was around two at the time, and felt sad that he'd be growing up in a world where you had to worry about this, having just (relatively speaking) gotten out of the Cold War and growing up making childhood lists why your city would be nuked in a first strike.
