If you want something classy to enjoy over a long period of time get a bottle of port or cognac.

If you want something to share with your girlfriend get a bottle of ice wine.

If you want to get drunk in the shortest possible time and remember nothing the day after get a bottle of everclear.

What person have you ever met that liked port or cognac when they were 21? I contend that such a person does not exist.

If you go this route, for the love of Bob, get something to mix it with. Kool-Aid is still the standard, I believe.

Or, if you want to be a real baller, get yourself some salt, a few limes, and a bottle of this stuff!

I got myself some Glenfiddich 12 years aged scotch whiskey, because it seemed really classy, and the guy I know a the liquor store said it would age well, so when I open it in several years it'll be good. I also got some cheap stuff for my party this weekend. Still thinking about getting the crystal skull vodka. It's really cool stuff.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone!

Are we counting people who like to cook with the stuff, or just straight drinking it?

You don't drink it in shots, do you?

It's baffling to me that people do that. At 15%, it's like doing shots of wine.

ETA: Actually, do you mean the alcopop or a home mixed cocktail?

The mixed drink, and I've never even heard of them being taken in shots

Where's Sora when you need a list of beers to drink? Since he isn't here I'll copy pasta the beers he enjoys.

Soracloud wrote:

1)Stone Russian Imperial Stout Here it is. The greatest beer known. A Stout of course, but not just any stout, an Imperial Stout. Rightfully the king, this libation requires at least a year in solitude to reach its full potential. It rewards the patient with a taste of the Gods, High malt character, disguised warming alcohol that hides more with aging. Coffee and chocolate undertones and low carbonation. A rare beer to find, and ever rarer beer to make it through the aging process. The year old power can be increased by further aging. Wait five years then you will have this beer's final form.

Soracloud wrote:
4)Youngs Double Chocolate Stout Chocolate, Chocolate, Chocolate! From the first smell to the last sip, this stout is one of my favorites year round. Not the most robust of stouts but overpowering the smooth chocolate would be a sin. When consumed, it grants the drinker an English accent and a monocle.

5)Stone Arrogant ******* Whats not to like about a beer that totes so much arrogance, you feel like you could take down macro beer all by yourself with one sip. A reveler, whose charm can overbear the weak and strengthen men and women alike to a pedestal higher then any mere mortal can reach. High Alcohol, high Hops and high Malt.

I personally like Guinness and I enjoy Lindemans Framboise Lambic.

Although Sora undoubtedly knows more about beers than I do, especially American brews because of how hard to get they are out here, he's not the only beer fan on the boards.
I just didn't type much text for the recommendations because I'm no good at reviewing beers, only at enjoying them. Smiley: grin

And I'm guessing that Belgian beers are a pain in the *** to get over yonder.

Stella is readily available here (not sure about else where in NA) and there's another, but I can't remember the name of it for the life of me as I don't drink a ton of beer anymore and when I do it's likely English/Irish that I do.

WTF is "ice wine?" Is that like this?!

1. I loved port and cognac (and brandy and muscat) when I was 21. But my parents started me off with half a finger of wine in a sherry glass once a week at the dinner table when I was 13. And a few sips out of their stronger liquor glasses every now and then at the same age. By the time I was in my late teens I was having a teeny glass of my own liquor whenever my parents had some. They also drank beer, and offered me sips of it, but I never developed a taste for it. No matter what microbrew, or "premium" my family or friends ever offered me, one taste assured me I didn't want it. I did develop a taste for different types of beer breath on my partner, though!

I recommend this method of child-raising, since I unconsciously learned to drink alcohol for taste's sake, than for getting drunk. When I got to uni I was totally flabbergasted by almost everyone else around me going crazy on the "new" freedom to drink: which meant to drink until blind drunk. I'd estimate 1/3 of first years dropped out at the end of the first semester because they totalled themselves so regularly.

2. Ice wine is from grapes grown in the snow. The grapes freeze, and the ice crystals separate out the water from the rest of the grape juice, if you pick and smoosh the grapes REALLY quickly. The resultant concentrated grape juice makes wine that is very sweet, very fruity, flavourful, and strong.

Seems like I had a similar upbringing to Aripyanfar. I enjoyed the taste of a good port at a very young age. My supervisor suggested I get a good bottle of port when I turned 21 and drink it when ever something momentous happened in my life. Wife and I finished the bottle after she recovered from daughter's birth.

Icewine
A good description was all ready posted. I prefer Canadian traditional icewine over German. Canada requires the grapes to be colder when harvested. I would avoid any of the artificially frozen ones.

I think Stella being marketed as a classy beer over here is hilarious, because it's apparently the beer of wifebeaters in Europe.

I haven't had Stella but looking at BeerAdvocate it's not very fancy.
My personal favourite is Duvel because it's easy to drink while still complex enough in taste so it never gets boring and well, I'll just use a quote from the guys who own BeerAdvocate: "Pretty much sex in a bottle and the devil told me to drink it." Smiley: grin

I'd wager that the only Australian beer most people can name off the top of their head is Foster's and apparently that's the worst **** water they have.
