So I have a conundrum. We have all this furniture that we need to get rid of. I'm pressing a lot of it onto my friends, but we're still going to have a lot of stuff left over. My husband wants to use Craigslist to sell it, which is fine, but he leaves in a week. I'm not exactly excited by the thought of having stuff up on Craigslist to sell while I'm living by myself. I'm not certain that I'd be able to have someone at the house with me if/when someone wants to come buy it.

How do normal people handle this situation? Am I being too much of a wuss here?

Craigslist from what I've seen is very time dependent. If you don't get any contacts after 2-3 days, no one sends anything and you'd have to re-post it. So you can probably get away with one listing, maybe two, before he vanishes.

You can move your post to the top of the list, which would help, I think.

But I wouldn't have to... that might be helpful.

But then again... I don't necessarily want to live in an empty house for the next three months. Smiley: lol

Is it good furniture? Or is it stuff that college kids living off-campus would want to pick up? If you live anywhere near a college campus, you should post information sheets in the union about available furniture. Pick a weekend, and have the people who are interested all come on that weekend, so you can have someone with you. Same thing with Craigslist. Instead of having various people come on different days and times, have kind of an "open house" on a set day.

You're in Tennessee right now, right? Have a yard sale.

When it comes time to move, you can sell the rest through a reputable consignments store, if you don't have any family members willing to help you sell them.

I've done the 'meet in a public place' thing before.

Or are we talking about large furniture that doesn't move easily?

Some of it's ok. Some of it is just junk that we'll just toss.

The open house is a good idea, I may do that. Thanks!

We only have yard sales around Mule Day, and that's in April. I missed it.

Though, I'm sure if we put stuff out on the lawn and go to bed, it'll be gone in the morning...

I've never used one of those places, and I'm not sure this is that type of quality.

Bookshelves, beds, things like that. I mean, we're literally getting rid of EVERYTHING.

Hey, Vataro, need any furniture...? Or a house 45 minutes south of Nashville? 'Cause we're selling that, too...

45 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic and how fast you drive.

Don't just toss furniture if you're near college kids. They'll buy anything. Smiley: lol

Closest college is a community college with no housing.

My helpful craigslist list:
1) Take good pics.
2) Don't lie about defects/issues.
3) Price to sell, and also post that you need it gone ASAP (before your husband leaves).
4) Check your email often (or leave your number for people to call at a certain time).

#4 is huge with me. I've been trying to get an ipad2 on the cheap for the last few weeks. I contact, been never get a contact back Smiley: frown

Bah, not close enough. I was hoping for stumbling distance.

When I've sold stuff on craigslist, as an added precaution I've not posted my phone number or address in the ad, just an indirect email contact. Usually people are as willing to type out a short email as they are to text or call. Then I'll offer more information and my telephone number and talk to them before I give out my address.

Really, craigslist isn't too scary. You never really hear about people getting accosted trying to sell anything other than sex on craigslist, which you can't do anymore. Just put up a reasonable price/or best offer ad, and usually you'll get a few people who say "I'll give you X if you don't sell it for Y", so if you don't get your asking price you have a backup or two. Advertise things like smoke free, mostly pet free, kid free, etc. It gives you an edge over all the other couches/etc that are listed for around the same price point.

This.

I always make sure to have whatever it is by the door and ready to go to minimize small talk and keep them out of my house.

And for some reason, there's been a spat of CL crimes in San Diego. People getting robbed after they've responded to a list to buy/sell something. But then again, if you're dumb enough to meet in the alley way at 9:00 p.m. then you probably deserve to be robbed.

Pictures and a good description are always needed. And remember what you consider junk is another person's treasure.

For stuff you cannot get rid of otherwise, try freecycle.

I've always sold off CL and infact I still do and probably have about 30 postings currently active right now and I moved back to Nashville but to the worst possible area.. I miss Belle Meade, that's for sure! I needed to move back ASAP though and didn't have a down deposit to go back towards that area so I picked the No Deposit, No Background Check and a 6 Month Lease... You can only find in the ghetto. I think you are being a wuss (: I'm a single mom but I do meet people at Glenview Elementary School for the little stuff.

I'm coming to your open house (: Make sure you post THAT on CL

I don't think we need any furniture, but I'll ask. And unless the house is super cheap, 45 mins away from Nashville is a bit far :P.
