That's right folks, the lockout is over and football is back in season and with that it brings an exciting new season of Fantasy Football.

(This is also cross-posted @ Wowhead http://www.wowhead.com/forums&topic=193311&p=2799366 )

For the last couple years I've always wanted to play in a fantasy league that wasn't full of strangers (I've played in random leagues for the last several years on NFL.com and a few other sites) and it finally dawned on me why don't I run a league for everyone at Wowhead and ZAM! There should at least be enough of us to have a fun time this season.

This year (hopefully going to be having this yearly) we will be using Fleaflicker.
You can signup for the league at http://www.fleaflicker.com/nfl/league?leagueId=107925 password is tastydataz

For those unfamiliar with how Fantasy Football works I'll give you a quick rundown here. At the beginning of the season we hold a draft, much like the official draft used in sports each player takes turns picking players to fill out their roster (we will have an an automatic draft where you rank the order of players you want picked). Every week you will be setup to "play" against another person in your division. Before the games start on Sunday (or Thursday if your players have one of those games) you will pick your starters for each position and once the game starts your players earn you points if they do good. After all the games are over your points are added up and the player who has the most points wins. After the season is over we go into the playoffs where some of the best teams compete in a single elimination tournament and the player who wins is crowned Champion with bragging rights!

I'll be writing a guide in the next couple days on how to setup your draft rankings and use the site for those who aren't familiar with Fantasy Football.

If there are any questions I'll be checking back here frequently.

Sounds like fun! I have done a league with my school's speech team for the past 3 years but I graduated so that is probably closing for me. Perfect timing. Oh, and for iPhone users, and probably other smart phones, there is an app for fleaflicker.

If this was true gamer fantasy football they would allow shotguns and 1up mushrooms.

How and when is the draft going to be run? If it's going to be something where I won't be able to be around for it, I really wouldn't want to bother being in a league.

The draft is on 8/22 but you don't have to be there to draft you just need to rank your players.

I've never tried fantasy football. Never been much of a pro sports fan. I've always wondered what the hype was about with fantasy football, maybe I'll give it a shot. It should be an easy win on everyone else part.

It's pretty fun, but some people get a little too into it, I think.

Depends really, maybe some people aren't into it enough?

Anyways, if your league needs some filling out you can shoot me an invite.

Never mind, all set now.

So, fewyn, have you talked to management about prizes?

I'll throw this in here because there might be a chance somebody has thought of this, or has an idea:

I want to set up a new scoring system for fantasy football where the weekly fantasy team matchups actually matter. It would have to be an IDP league, and the performance of the defensive players would have an impact on the performance of the other teams offense. For example you could have a team that has a great passing game, but play against a team with a loaded secondary that would more or less shut down the passing offense.

I cant come up with a solid way of matching players up using the statistics that are provided. What a friend and I have come up with so far is assigning a weight to a defender based on relevent stats (tackles/ints/etc) that takes a cut of the overall allowed passing/rushing yards by that players team, which then will reduce the yardage of opposing fantasy teams passing/rushing yards.

A major dilemma I'm having with it is that it seems alot of the things i come up with could be done just by giving more points for defensive stats, which i dont want.

The way its set up now though, the weekly matchups mean a lot in the outcome of the season, but are really pretty irrelevant themselves.

If your QB throws and interception and the other team's defender gets an interception, you lose a touchdown. Every 3 sacks reduces a TD down to a FG.

No idea if that can work in IDP, but that's how my keeper league works, but we pick team D's, not individuals.

Need 3 more people. Come on folks! Even if you've never played fantasy football before, it's pretty easy and enjoyable.

Also, any word on possible prizes? Not that it matters since I won't win, but I think it's fun to actually have something to win.

I have no idea how American football works. The closest I've ever come is when I used to play Rugby, and as far as I can tell that's an insult to Rugby.

There's less protective gear in rugby, so it's safer.

I believe the hits are harder in American Football.

I prefer Rugby football though. I always liked the saying "Football is a game for gentlemen played by thugs, Rugby is a game for thugs played by gentlemen". You can really see the difference when you watch them, though. The level of respect for say, the ref, or opposition fans is staggeringly different.

Exactly. Give a man a protective helmet and he'll just slam his head against the wall harder.

This looks like the perfect time for a Gus Frerotte reference.

Ouch.
