The Herald (where my husband works now) actually has some "special tabs" sections, like a real estate tab and a church tab and a health tab. Who knows, maybe this paper does stuff like that too, and we can be roomies!!

Smiley: yippee

Yeah, special tabs is what I did when I worked at the newspaper here. Created the ads, did the layout, packed it up and shipped it out to be printed (if it was something our older press couldn't handle).

What I have learned from this thread is that only military people live in Hawaii.

It's mostly military, old people (More specifically old lawyers), surfing aficionados and poor people.

I really hope they give him a significant raise or it's going to be tough on you guys there. Smiley: frown

It'll be a culture shock too, if you're not at all familiar with Asian cultures now would be a nice time for a crash course. Native Hawaiians aren't bad at all, unless you act like the stereotypical loud opinionated mainlander. You'll get plenty looks, but if you're open minded enough you'll fit in. Just don't go Waianae, should have no reason to anyway.

Always eat as much of everything as you can, be open minded and try new things. Never say you don't like something. Don't suggest they change or do things differently. There'll be some initial resentment towards you no matter what, take it in stride, some people will never warm up to you; they don't need or want you on their islands.

Beware the rumor mill. People are more apt to not say what they really think of you as not to stir the pot. Remember the nail that sticks up gets hammered down. It's better to be quiet and have people think you're a fool, then speak up and remove all doubt.

That's all I can think of. The wife's family has lived there for nearly 100 years now, well the ones that aren't native at least. She left Hilo 12 years ago for college and hasn't been back to the town since, as a frame of reference. She misses the culture and the food, but Hawaii isn't the 'paradise' it was 50 years ago. Her family lives a much better life on the mainland.

Either way, good luck with your new opportunity. Smiley: smile

His salary will more than double.

But I make almost three times what he makes right now. So that'll be... interesting.

That does make it interesting...

Have you taken a look at your own job prospects there at all?

S'all I've done since Wednesday afternoon. I've applied at four places, two of which it turns out are in Honolulu. Whoops. Smiley: blush I'm not used to Monsterjobs.com, so when it showed the first four all in Hilo, I didn't realize it was then going to show me jobs all over the place after that.

But I've done the math. If we don't eat, we can easily live on his salary!

IIRC, my father-in-law worked two jobs most of the time they lived there, and the mother-in-law worked as well. From the Mrs' stories it sounds like the typical small town, in that there's not a whole lot to do there and half the town is related to each other. Though they have a Walmart now I hear; moving up in the world I guess. There's a bit more on the Kona side when you get sick of the rain. Smiley: smile

Also, don't take the lava rock. Pele doesn't like that. Smiley: wink

Well, the town sounds like about the size of the place we live now, so I'd be used to that. I don't want to live in a big city, anyway. :)

And, keep in mind, we don't have any kids. So we don't have those extra expenses and extra mouths to feed. Just one, small, six pound puppy. Smiley: grin

I can't speak for the big island or Hilo, but bogus job offers are common in Honolulu. They usually ask for money to secure you a place, or personal information to get the paperwork started. The fact that they want him ASAP and they're willing to double his salary makes me a little skeptical. A lot of times the whole process happens very fast, from the time the resume is sent, the offer is extended, to them pushing for whatever it is they're after. They try to get you while the "I got a job in Hawaii" shock is still fresh and the person isn't thinking about what they're doing. I assume the salary they're offering is still in line with the job, or is this a dream job type of thing?

I'm not saying the job is bogus, but it's worth being skeptical and looking into.

Thank you for the concern, but it's not bogus at all. It's a newspaper under the same company as the paper he's currently with, his boss knows the editor (sees him at the editor conferences every year) and has spoken with him about my husband just this week. It's legit. Smiley: smile

That does make me a little wary of applying for jobs for myself, though, so thanks!!

ETA: Also - His salary will be more than double, but that's because he's paid crap here. The start salary on the website he applied through was double, and he thinks he can get the high end salary. And they aren't asking any money from him or personal information to do any paperwork. They have only asked for his resume and samples of his work.

What? Lord of the Flies taught me that that's what you do on islands. You kill the fat, sickly kid.

Not luau, lau lau.

Is different.

Luau is a whole meal event thing lau lau is a dish. Lau lau is delicious, better than spam even.

Horsemouth linked me a marvellous documentary about Hawaiian pidgin and I learned loads from it.

For the record, I understood that there just as well as I would have normal English. Really.
