It's been a really long time since I've dyed my hair. Over the past years it's turned completely grey.
Not that I dont mind having grey hair but being mistaken for someone in thier 60 is becomming an issue.
The past I've had it a drk brown which is close to my normal hair color. A friend suggested maybe a red instead.
I'm open to suggestions from you'all.

If you were still a guy you wouldn't care about going grey. You'd just be more "distinguished". Reversal time.

I've been dying my hair red for the last 10 years, recently I've switched to purple dye (makes it look blackish until I wash it a couple of times) as that fades to more of a red colour where I find red fades to ginger. I usually go for Schwarzkopf Live in Cyber Purple, I have naturally dark hair so I'm guessing you'd get a more intense colour. I had a woman come up to me in a shop and say that she wishes she could dye her hair like mine but that her grey hairs would go to bright if she did. Might be something to consider if you want to go for a more subtle look. Also the further away you get from your current hair colour the more roots will show, so there's maintenance to worry about too.

I love having red hair so that colour would get my vote too. That being said I've seen a lot of younger people with dyed grey hair (personally not a look I like but it seems to be fairly popular) so you could dye it more of a blonde or silvery grey and jump on that fashion wagon (might be easier to maintain).

I would love to dye my hair green (did streaks when I was at school and the colour was great) or blue (problem there is when it fades) but my job requires a semi sensible hair colour.

I have dyed my hair three times, and only once was it a pleasant experience.

1. Some wash-out, 7-day dye for Otakon back in freshman year of college, when I wanted black hair to go with a costume (Seta from Love Hina). My girlfriend did that for me, but burned my scalp with scalding water... ouch.
2. I wanted actual blonde hair instead of dirty blonde, and asked my girlfriend of the time for help since she dyed her hair constantly. Ended up getting Super Saiyan bright yellow hair, and had to deal with it for over a month before I could get it chopped off.
3. Last time wasn't bad. Had my current girlfriend do it, and it came out pretty well. Not nearly as blonde as my last one. But still, I wasn't "wow'ed"... it was too subtle for me to notice a huge difference. Oh well.

My advice? Stick with your most natural color. It won't be eye-catching, but you won't look like an anime character Smiley: lol

I'll stick with my natural dirty blonde locks (heh, "lockes") until I start going grey. Likely it'll be early, as both my mother and father started going grey in their early thirties.

This is why the box tells you to do a color test, mister.

I just had my hair dyed dark brown, almost black. I'm liking it.

I used to do red, but with my dark hair it was more a maroon color. It still looked good.

Try red!

Try henna. Sciffy has henna hairdye parties.

The only problem with henna is that browns can turn out kind of random, so it's safer to go with reds.

If you're male and colouring your hair for any reason other than to hide grey hair, then you're gay. Get out of the closet and accept this about yourself.
If you're male and colouring your hair because its grey, then stop, man up and accept yourself for who/what you are.

No exceptions. I speak in absolutes on this one.

what if I want to dye a picture of an anime character onto my gelled out hair

Well, I'm not a guy and I've gotten tired of being called Old woman/lady. 50 is not that old.
I guess I'm lucky my brother is bald and I'm not. But the grey/silver hair has to go.

If you want to do it, go for it. Just know that if I were to see you, I'd tell you that you're gay. Actually, I wouldn't, unless you asked and then I would.

Honestly if you're trying to cover up gray I would stay away from any light colors. Dark red would probably be fine, but the issue with reds is that they fade very easily. Color treated specialty shampoo is a must with dyed red hair, and you need to avoid over-washing as well.

Of course that also depends on what kind of gray you're talking about. Is your hair full on gray, salt and pepper, or just gray in some spots? If it's full on gray you could probably get away with lighter colors. Otherwise I'd stick with something similar to your natural hair color.

I had the opposite experience, actually. My red stayed and bled through my next color. It actually looked good, so I wasn't too upset, but I had no issue with it fading at all.

Huh, that's odd. Red fading faster than other colors has continually been my experience and every other person I've talked to besides you. Maybe you're just weird. Smiley: tongue
