They are risen.Follow

I'm a little surprised no one from down here has mentioned this before.

The 17-year Cicadas are out. They are ugly ***** that rise up out of the ground around trees, cling to the trees and shed their skin, then have sex, bury their eggs underground, and die all within a couple of weeks.

They are absolutely disgusting. I don't mind the sound they make, and it's sort of soothing to hear them all in the trees droning on, but when you're driving down the road and you hit four or five huge, nasty bugs before you've been in the car five minutes, it's gross. And if one of them land on you, they STICK to you, and stare at you with those nasty red eyes.

Ugh, I can't wait until they all die again.

This doesn't look like a reason to not wall the state in.

I hate you a little right now. :(

My OP is wrong, these are actually 13 year Cicadas. A guy I dated in college was visiting me when the last cycle came around. He lived in Memphis and they don't get any there, apparently. When he got home a friend came to see him, and one of these mosters was stuck to his headlight. His friend looked at it, jumped about three feet in the air, and said, "What the @#%^ is THAT???"

I was in Hilton Head once during an infestation of love bugs. They were EVERYWHERE. You literally 'waded' through them as you walked, and every step would kill 3 or four beneath you. After a five minute drive, your car was plastered with them. That was a huge pain, because they're apparently slightly acidic, and if you left the carcasses on your paint they would partially erode it after a day or so. So you had to wash your car almost every single time you drove it.

At least they're not that creepy, and they don't bite.

Oh, we had them for months when I lived in FL. I'd prefer cicadas, I think...

I was born into the cicada cycle, I am familiar with their overwhelming song. When I was little I'd watch cicadas and birds have thrilling aerial combat battles over the school playground.

The cicadas around my city are a pretty, uniform green colour.

Their wings are the closest things in nature to fairy wings, and I love them for that. I found a cicada wing in the garden, and thought that I could convince my four year old sister that fairies were real if I gave it to her. I did convince her that they were real, but I REALLY should have used the phrase: "Oh look, the fairies are moulting their wings now!" instead of: "Oh look! The birds have been eating the fairies again!" Poor traumatized little sister!

Imagine a green version of these wings:

Their little claws are like forward facing hooks. They act a lot like the fastening on a bra. Cicadas have to climb up treetrunks from the root, and later like to rest on treetrunks facing upwards, and their claws help that. So to remove a cicada from your person, gently grasp it on either side between forefinger and thumb, so you can easily see its face, and gently pull the cicada forward and then up, as if you were unhooking a bra. It should come off easily and fly away when you let go.

Oh duh! Cat's claws! Cicadas are like a cat's paw. Treat it like a cat's paw and it's easy to manage.

They had the green and red ones around Prescott, AZ where I went to college. Things were all over the place. That was the same year we had the massive beetle infestation. Brown beetles the size of golf balls, in a carpet as far as the eye could see. Literally. Walking to class was <crunch> <crunch> <crunch>. I was mostly alarmed because there may have been spiders lurking amongst them. The Cicadas never really bothered me though. But given my feelings about spiders, I can certanly sympathize with the "death to all cicadakind" movement

Plus, I'm sure there's at least one species of spider that preys on them, and more of them means more of the spider, right? I say we kill em all just to be sure.

Also, ever since watching Neon Genesis, the sound of cicadas drives me up a wall.

They were out here a few years back. I remember driving home from work one day and I had my windows up, the AC blowing pretty hard, the radio on fairly loud, and even over all that and the general wind noise that comes with driving, I could STILL hear those bastards. Man, they're loud.

Ari, the green ones are really pretty! But then I have a thing for green things with transparent wings.

My friend actually has a cicada wing shirt. It's awesome. And pretty. \o/

I remember we had a Cicada cycle when I was in junior high school I believe, so about 8-9 years ago. It was such a horrible experience, though I've moved since then so I don't know when my new area should be getting their next cycle.
