Yesterday, my dog stopped eating. Well, not really. I gave her a bacon flavored bone, and she devoured it, but today I realized that she didn't eat any of her dog food, just the bone I gave her. She's a drive-by nibbler, so I didn't think much of it, but today, I noticed she hadn't eaten anything again. I got down on the floor with her and showed her the bowl, and she backed away from it like she was afraid. It's so weird, she was fine all week, and suddenly she's terrified of her food dish.

It's a stainless steel bowl, so I thought maybe her rabies tag was clinking against it and that was bothering her, so I took that off, but nothing. Then I put the food into a glass dish and she seemed to be ok with that, but now she won't go near that, either. Even when I put some yummy bacon flavored treats in it, she won't go near it. It's so strange.

Anyone else see this happen? Any suggestions? I'm thinking I may just buy some plastic dishes when I'm out tomorrow, I'm not sure what else to do. :(

Have you ever considered that she doesn't like the dog food itself?

She'll eat the food out of my hand, just not out of the dish. :(

I'm guessing that would be one reason she tried throwing in the yummy bacon flavoured treats.

Try using a plate. One of my wife's cats doesn't like eating form bowls because the sides annoy its whiskers.

That's a thought. I may try that, thanks.

If you constantly feed him from the hand/give them treats with their meals, they're only going to hold out as long as possible for a yummy anck.

I probably should post any more tonight, or else it will be gibberish.

Weirdest thing my dog does is sleeps with his ear in his water bowl.

Awesome! Glad it wasn't anything serious and was just an animal being "weird."

Probably his version of White Noise so he can sleep better.

Pets are much like kids in their ways. They can hold out waiting for that great treat over eating their
regular meals just like kids will not eat their veggies but want desert.

My mom has a little chihuahua, and for the first half a year they had him, he wouldn't eat food out of his dish. He'd slowly walk up, grab a piece, run away to the corner eat it, then repeat. He was the runt of a litter so he was used to having his food stolen from him.

My parents got a little food dispensing red egg. The dog bats it, and it rocks back and forth and drops a few pieces of food out of adjustable holes on the sides. He seems to love it. He'll walk up, bat it, eat the few pieces that drop, bat it again, repeat, until he's done eating, then trot off.

Apparently he also loves brocolli stems (not the buds, just the stems), lettuce, and potatoes.

You didn't happen to get an Akita or a Shiba Inu did you?

My dog will eat cucumbers and apples, My old dog would do damn near anything to get black licorice.

My roommate always tells us about his old dog, who used to go completely insane for those. I mean, lose his mind level excitement for bananas while nothing else got nearly that kind of reaction.

No, but those dogs are adorable. She's a Shih Tzu / Maltese mix.

She wasn't too sure about it at first, but she saw me eating it, so she figured she'd try it. ;)

I've never tried bananas for Tanga, but she goes crazy for apples, and even likes pickles a bit.

Do you have a shiba, Tyrrant? Ours likes apples, but isn't really into any other fruits or veggies. She'll eat 'em if we're having them and she suddenly gets it in her head that she really, really wants the thing that we're eating (which happens sometimes). Most of the time though, she looks like that image meme shiba with the broccoli. "Do not want!"

Sweet jesus does she love cat food, though. My girlfriend's mother (who's terribly weak willed with pets) had been giving it to her (despite me telling her not to) because the dog started begging for it when she was feeding the cat. Now she goes ******* whenever we're there and the cat's getting fed. I don't think it's actually the taste that gets her, though. She's obsessed with trying to eat the cat itself, and I think that she figures that eating the cat's food is close enough.

I stopped at the vet's office today to pick up a tick collar, and I saw the most beautiful St. Bernard puppy. He was 9 weeks old, and weighs 25 pounds. His name is Bear (freaking adorable) and we bonded a bit while his owner was talking to the receptionist. He came and sat on my foot so I started rubbing his ears and telling him he was a good boy. When his owner went to sit down and she called him, he flopped down on his side and grinned up at me. Ugh, he was so cute.

The owner told me, though, that he's trying to eat the couch. I can't imagine the damage control with a puppy like that.

NixNot would like him.

No I have a chow/Jackrussell mix, my other dogs have been a german shepherds, 2 Am.Staff terriers and an oddly mellow border collie. Though there is a breeder of Shiba's near me, my daughter wants another dog and it will likely end up being either a Shiba or if my wife gets her way a yorkie.

Hah! Ages ago, we were having Raclette at my grandparents', and my grandpa refused to eat the Raclette cheese until the dog ate some and liked it.

Eske, I used to live in a house with a little Yorkie and a few cats. The dog wouldn't eat any dry food unless the cats stole some of it. It was hilarious. It was sometimes difficult because he was also afraid of one of the cats, but we just took the other cat out into the hallway where his food was, let the cat eat some, and then he'd eat the rest without complaint.

Quite a variety! I'm obviously a big fan of the shibas (and no fan of yorkies at all), so I'm quite prejudiced. But our pup is awesome, and I highly recommend them. You're supposed to expect them to be heavily independent, but ours is pretty much a lap dog and very attached to us.

If you end up getting a shiba and would like advice, just hit me up.

My best friend has one, she is an awesome dog. I love seeing her reaction when she comes across a puddle, she puts one paw in and starts doing the "shiba scream" then goes out of her way to walk around it. Honestly I would rather an akita but my wife is skittish around larger dogs, she liked the security of Zeus, the GS, but hated his size.

Hah, that's awesome. Yeah ours is anti-water as well. Rain, puddles, baths, whatever. She doesn't quite do the scream...its more of a high-pitched crying whine noise, but it comes out in force whenever she has to get a bath or one of us leaves the house (I'm told that it's worst when I leave for work in the morning). She's a huge wuss.

So cute though. If you hold her in your lap, she'll mush her muzzle against your mouth until you kiss her. If you stop kissing her, she'll press it even harder.

She's getting a bath this weekend. Maybe I'll post some sad wet dog pictures.

Akitas are cool. They strike me as a beefy version of the shiba. Though I shudder to think what my dog would be like with an extra 70 lbs. on her. Smiley: eek
